The best polishers for your car
Every motorist wants their favorite car to look new at all times. But, unfortunately, this is impossible without additional care. Over time, the paintwork loses its aesthetic characteristics, it shows signs of pebble marks, rust or small scratches. The easiest and most affordable way to solve the problem is to use a car polisher. With its help, you will not only update the appearance of your car, but also get rid of traces of rust or oxidation. To choose the right option, to begin with, it is worth getting acquainted with the parameters of the best and most popular models of polishers available on the market today. For this purpose, we have compiled a ranking of the best car polishers.
Our top 3 polishers look like this:
- The Porter-Cable 7424XP is the most popular polisher and is often included in the work kit of professional workshops. It is a 15cm variable speed device that, compared to other polishers, is offered at a relatively affordable price.
- Dewalt is a world-renowned brand known for the reliability and quality of its tools. The DWP849 car polisher is one of their most popular machines, but it costs more than the other models on our list.
- Griot’s Garage recently released their latest 10813STDCRD orbital polisher with a 3-meter cord. It was designed for both beginners and experienced professionals and is a very popular offering.
The best car polishers
Which car polish is best on the market?
There are two types of machines that are commonly used in the detail industry, and in this article we will do our best to explain the differences between these two different types of machines, the question of which machine works best for which process, and more importantly, which tool is best for your car care needs. We also know that there is a lot of anxiety about using a machine to polish the paint on a car because there is a perceived risk that either the paint will be burned or whirls will be burned into the paint. Read our new review about Best car brakes! It is very useful and interesting.
There are two main types of tools or machines that are commonly used in the detail industry to either correct irregularities in color or apply different types of polishes and waxes. These include, but are not limited to,
- Directly driven rotary buffers
- Random Orbital Polisher
The main difference between these two tool types is how the pads move when these tools are turned on. Let us take a closer look at both types of tools and how the drive mechanism works.
Rotary Buffers
Rotary buffers differ drastically in their mode of operation from Random Orbital Polishers. The drive unit used in a rotary buffer is called a direct drive motor. This means that the screw (the threaded part to which the carrier plate is attached) is driven directly by the electric motor and drive mechanism. This results in a powerful rotation that rotates a polishing pad clockwise when you look at the rotating buffer from behind as if you were holding it on a panel during polishing.
Since the rotary buffer is a direct drive machine, it can do a lot of work very quickly. By the word work, we mean that the rotating buffer has the ability and power to very quickly remove a lot of paint from the surface. Example: If you have a scratch in the surface of your car, say someone has keyed your car, or a cat has jumped on the hood and left scratches, or even the slight scratches caused by improper car washing with dirty washing gloves.
Random Orbital Polisher
The motors and drive units used to build random orbital polishers offer two different mechanical actions to rotate the polishing pad when cleaning, polishing, on the other hand, adding a wax layer to a vehicle finish. However, unlike a rotary buffer, instead of a direct drive mechanism to rotate the polishing pad in one direction, orbital polishers use a mechanism that causes the pad to both rotate and simultaneously oscillate in an eccentric pattern within that larger, main rotary pattern or machine action…
What is better wax or polish for car?
A polish is used to prepare the color before applying the wax. Polishing agents remove one minute of paint layer and many of them have fillers to remove twist marks or extremely fine scratches.
After polishing the paint (possible by hand, but much better by machine polishing) it is ready for the wax. The wax is the protective layer that beads off water after application and makes future washing processes much easier. Usually you should give a good polish and wax every six months.
How does Polish work?
Without coming to technology, modern car polishing contains less and less abrasives floating in a carrier liquid. When you apply the polish to the surface of the paint, the abrasive particles remove a microscopic layer of clear lacquer. This means that we can lower the clear coat content below the depth of swirls and scratches and remove them. The polish also removes fog, water stains etc. from the surface. Machine polishing removes a larger amount of clear lacquer faster than manual polishing.
Types of Polish
There are many types of polish on the market from many different manufacturers that all deliver wonderful results, but it is important to know what the different types of polish do so that you buy the right product for the job.
- Glaze
- Pre-wax cleaner
- Pre-sealing Cleaning agent
- Cleaner polish
- All in one
- Compound
- Finishing polish
Glaze
A glaze is not a polish, it is a shiny product that continues after polishing, but before waxing or sealing. It is made with oils and wetting agents that enhance the gloss of your color and improve clarity. Glazes are usually used by car manufacturers and body shops to refine freshly painted surfaces before the vehicle is handed over to the customer. Glazes usually do not have protective properties, but they can have fillers that hide slight irregularities in the paint. A glaze is often used by a body shop after compounding to restore shine and remove haze.
Pre-wax cleaner
As the name suggests, this is used before applying a wax, it contains a small amount of abrasives and a larger amount of oils to clean and prepare the surface for the wax.
Pre-Sealing Detergent
This may sound like the pre-wax cleaner, it is indeed different as the pre-seal cleaner uses solvents to clean and prepare the surface. This product helps your sealant bond with the paint and provides a more durable and durable surface. Products such as Jeff Workshop and Class are sold in sets containing a cleaner and a sealant and should be used as such.
Cleaner polish
This product contains slimming abrasives and a glaze. It will refresh the appearance of the paint by removing light swirls and chicanes. It also contains brighteners so that it fills in defects in the paint and leaves a good shine.
All in one
This is the most popular type of polish that people reach for. As the name suggests, this product is “all in one”, it contains abrasives, glazes and wax, but the results are short-lived. It does not remove much clear varnish and does not cause any surface damage; these products tend to have many fillers that cover up any defects.
Compound
A compound is a polish that contains abrasive particles, it is used to remove a considerable amount of clear coat. If your paint has many scratches, swirls or two water stains, the detailer can use a compound to remove them. These products leave a hazard in the paint, as they are aggressive. If you have a dark color, you will need to apply a final polish.
Finishing polish
This jewelry polish is used to remove very small bumps in color. It improves gloss and clarity and is necessary for dark colors after compounding to remove the damage. For light colors such as white and silver, this is not absolutely necessary, as you do not see any danger in the color.
Do you wax or polish your car first?
Most of us live on a tighter budget than we would like, so most of you will choose one of these car buffers that gets by the most with the lowest price. In a perfect world, you would probably have 4 different types of polish; a specific buffer for a particular job. With all that, how do you choose the best buffer that will suffice most and allow you to go furthest?
- The simplest answer will be to choose one of the random orbital auto buffers from our top list;
- 95% of you will only need a single polisher to start, and it will hold you for years, so go with one of the random orbitals.
- For the other 5% of you who either want ultimate versatility or want to branch into other areas of detailing, such as heavy oxidation removal on boats and motor homes, you need a knob for this kind of work.
What is the best car polish to remove scratches?
It is amazing how many brands of car polish you can find on the shelves when you go to your local department store or automotive supplier. At Amazon, there are literally thousands of different types of car polish to choose from. The key to choosing the right car polish for your needs is to find out how these compounds work and familiarize yourself with the contents of the polish. It is also advisable to buy from the most prestigious brands, as there are many small and newer brands that do not even know exactly how their products work.
What does car polish do?
This is an extremely important question to ask yourself before you even start looking for a good car wax or polish. It is amazing how many car professionals don’t really know the full features of car polishing. When I heard the term “car polish” for most of my life, the image of a red, glowing and shiny car came to mind at an antiques show. However, my mental image was really the result of a multi-stage exterior cleaning and finishing process. Polishing is simply one of the steps in this process, but it is certainly one of the most important.
Car polishing sometimes applies to a wide range of meanings, but real car exterior polishing is a compound or solution to correct or mask mistakes in the paintwork of the vehicle and at the same time increase the gloss on the surface of the paintwork.
As I mentioned earlier, polishing is only one of the steps and one of the solutions to fully restore a beautiful car paint job. There are many other steps and chemical compounds that can help to achieve an amazing end result, such as chemical paint cleaners, glazes, waxes and more! I will talk a little about some of these other compounds throughout the article, but for the most part, I will focus on polishing alone. However, there are many products that offer some of these other solutions with the combined polish.
When should car polish be used?
Car polish is usually not intended to be used regularly for maintenance. In view of this, I would not recommend using a serious polish unless it is some kind of serious paint defect. However, some enthusiasts will use a Polish wax combination several times a year to give their car a little facelift. If the All-in-One solution provides a protective layer, it can be used 3 to 4 times a year. However, if there are no defects in the paint, it may be best to skip the polishing step and go directly to a sealant, gloss, wax or other protective coating as required. Learning when and how to polish a car is a very rewarding journey!
Auto Buffer / Polisher Buyer’s Guide
If you want to buy an Autopolisher/Buffer, there is much more to consider than just the price. To get a buffer that best suits your needs, you need to look at some of the most important features that most buffers normally have. Here are some of the things worth taking a good look at before you buy your auto buffer/polisher:
The 5 most important things to keep in mind when buying a new car buffer
Power
Take a close look at the performance of an electric blower that has you thinking about buying it. You need to know the number of amps the buffer motor produces and the number of RPM’s or OPM’s it produces. You do not need much power to wax or polish a vehicle whose exterior is in good shape. On the other hand, a car outside that has many scratches and swirls on its paint job will require a higher blower output to make it look nice.
Ergonomics
Waxing and polishing your car can be very tiring, to say the least. You do not want this to be put together by using a buffer that is not very comfortable to use. You want your buffer to have adjustable handles and a very ergonomic design. This is especially true if you know that you will be polishing and polishing for long periods.
Ease of use
Pay attention to the characteristics of a blower that facilitates handling. These include variable speed controls, easily accessible trigger accelerators and soft start functions. You also want the changes to the polishing pads to be easy to make.
Versatility
You can go through a buffer that just polishes, but there are some of these that do other things too that you may want to consider. A good example are the buffers on our list that are also suitable as handy body grinders.
Warranty
Your buffer is placed in all kinds of unfavorable conditions while you are using it. Therefore, it is nice to have a long lasting warranty on the one you buy. So be sure to inform yourself about the warranty before you buy.
Which car wax lasts longest?
Lacquer sealants usually last longer than carnauba wax. If you buy the right sealant, you can wait about six months between applications, while carnauba wax has to be re-applied every eight weeks or so.
How can I make my car shine better?
THE PERFECT SHINE
The Perfect Shine is a simple process that reliably achieves the best possible gloss on any paint surface. Grab the auto detailing supplies listed here and follow these steps and product recommendations:
Step 1: Wash & Dry
Wash your car twice with a high concentration of car wash solution. I recommend a shine shampoo. If your car is excessively dirty, you can use Dawn dishwashing detergent. If so, rinse them thoroughly.
Step 2: Detailing Sound
After washing and drying, inspect the paint on your car by hand. If the paint is not perfectly smooth, use a color-cleaning clay system and clay lubricant to remove surface contaminants. Check your clay regularly to look for hard particles that should be selected. Reshape the clay when it becomes dirty to expose fresh clay.
Step 3: Repair paint damage
If the paint is clean and free of surface contamination, inspect it again for minor surface damage. If you notice severe scratches or surface scratches, repair them with a fine friction compound or scratch. If your paint has whirls and other small micro-pollutants, use a whirl removal polish. You can polish by hand or machine. Machine polishing tends to work faster and produce better results.
Step 4: Restore Finish Clarity
Now is the time to glaze your paint to reveal its full gloss potential. For this, I recommend a whirl remover polishing. Whirl-free polishes are designed to remove fine whirling stains, not the severe paint damage that was removed in the previous step. If your paint job is already in perfect condition, you can skip this step.
Step 5: Seal and Protect
After perfect polishing, your paint is ready to be sealed. This is a great time for a product that has been protecting cars for years, Class All-In-One. The class AIO acrylic formula has proven itself repeatedly.
Class All-In-One is a single-stage acrylic resin that cleans lightly polishes and protects paintwork with a durable acrylic surface. The best way to apply Class All-In-One is with a microfiber applicator. Class All-In-One contains cleaners that remove previous layers of Class All-In-One.
If you wish to apply additional Class Acrylic protection, you can apply one or more layers of Class Sealant Glaze. Class Sealant Glaze contains no detergents, it is a pure acrylic sealant. Additional layers of Sealant Glaze class increase protection and surface depth.
Step 6: Make it pop!
You are almost there. The last step, the literal icing on the cake, is show car wax. You may wonder, “After polishing and sealing, why wax?” The answer lies in the wealth of color, depth and clarity that only a high quality carnauba wax can produce on a polished surface.

However, Carfidant’s Scratch and Whirl Remover Kit is a cost-effective alternative when it comes to repairing paintwork.
As with other available compounds, Carfidant’s product is formulated to both repair surface scratches and smooth the paint surface for a shiny finish.
