Is synthetic oil the best option to use in my Honda vehicle?

Do Honda cars need synthetic oil?

The secret to getting the most out of the investment you have made in your new Honda car, truck, minivan or crossover SUV is to keep up with regularly scheduled maintenance – such as oil changes. As important as regular maintenance is, it is all the more important that things are done properly, such as using the right fuel and of course engine oil. A common question asked by Cape Girardeau Honda product experts is: “Do Honda cars need synthetic oil? As with most things in the automotive industry, there is no helpful, hard and quick answer to this question. We have asked some of the experienced technicians in our service department to get the best information possible. That is what they had to say. Do you need best oil for Toyota 4runner? Read so our review!

What is synthetic engine oil?

Before we tell you what the best type of oil is to use for your Honda car, we thought it would be beneficial to take a look at what synthetic oil actually is. Synthetic oil starts its life like its conventional counterpart by being extracted from the ground. From there, the two types of oil go very different ways. Synthetic oil is not only refined, but also distilled and broken down into its most elementary molecules, and special additives are added to the mixture before being reassembled. Synthetic oil protects engines better over a wider temperature range, lasts longer than conventional oil and can help engines extend their life.

What is the best oil for use in a Honda vehicle?

According to the expert technicians in our service department, the best rule of thumb is to always visit an authorized service center that uses Honda genuine oil. Instead of genuine Honda engine oil, the manufacturer recommends the use of oil with an asterisk symbol on the label.

This is not a sophisticated marketing tool. Instead, it is used to designate a product that meets or exceeds certain standards that adequately protect the engine and help reduce emissions caused by the combustion of fuel by the engine.

If it has been a while since you have had an oil change or have questions about the optimal care of your Honda vehicle, make an appointment today with Cape Girardeau Honda Service Department.

  • If your car’s manual says to use 5w20 synthetic old then use 5w20 synthetic oil. Especially if u have 8th+ gen Honda.
  • The 2013 Accord requires a 0w-20 oil, which is mostly synthetic. At least it is a synthetic mixture.

The best 0w-20 now would be Eneos Sustina 0w-20. Other high quality fluids are Mazda w/Moly 0w-20, Toyota Genuine 0w-20 or Honda Synthetic 0w-20 (NOT the Honda Synthetic-blend 0w-20).

Amsoil Signature 0w-20 and Redline 0w-20 are also very strong high performance oils.

For a cheaper solution: Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20, Quaker State 0w-20 or Mobil 1 0w-20 are easy to find at Walmart.
Oil is essential for the proper functioning and longevity of the engine in your ACCORD. Refer to your maintenance manual for how often the oil level needs to be refilled, or plan your next oil change. The frequency of these procedures depends on two main criteria: the engine specifications of your Honda ACCORD and the year of manufacture.

Please refer to your vehicle’s technical manual to determine which engine oil to select from the various indices and standards. In particular, you will find information that will enable you to select an oil according to its viscosity index: 0W, 5W, 10W or 15W. The standard option is recommended, namely the brand recommended by the manufacturer. When selecting a suitable engine oil for your Honda ACCORD, you must also consider different types of oil: mineral, synthetic or semi-synthetic. It is your driving style and the type of roads you use (mainly long distances on roads or motorways, city driving, etc.) that allow you to choose the ideal type of engine oil for your Honda ACCORD.

Best oil for Honda Accord V6

How to change oil in your Honda Accord

The 2009 manual for this Honda Accord LX Premium Sedan recommends the use of SAE 5W-20 weight oil. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine of this car requires 4.4 US quarters (4.2 liters) for an oil change. A 3.5L V6 Accord requires 4.5 U.S. quarts (4.3 liters).

Some other compatible filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mobil 1 M1-110, Frame PH7317, Royal Purple 10-2867, Wix 51356, Pennzoil HPZ-37, Bosch 3323 and ACDelco PF2057.

The first step is to heat the engine to operating temperature to remove any engine contaminants in the waste oil. As the engine warmed up, take out mechanic 2 1/4 tons of floor jack and 3 tons of car jack. Then park the car. The oil filter and the oil drain plug are on the passenger side of the engine, so carefully lift this side of the car off the floor. For added safety, place a support leg next to the floor lifter.

Under the car, you will find the original blue Honda oil filter and the silver metal drain plug directly under the oil filter next to the wheel housing. To remove the oil drain plug you will need a 17mm wrench or a 17mm socket wrench with a 3/8″ drive ratchet. Make sure that you have an oil collection container under the vehicle before starting to remove the oil drain plug. To allow the old oil to drain more quickly, the engine should already be heated and the oil filler cap on top of the engine removed. By removing the oil filler cap, you allow air to enter and prevent the formation of a vacuum. Please be careful, as the oil escaping from the engine may be hot.

Wear latex gloves and use a towel to remove the oil drain plug. This minimizes the possibility of burns and prevents the old oil from touching your skin. Used engine oil is a known carcinogen. While waiting for the old oil to drain off, lubricate the rubber O-ring seal of the new Purolator L14610 oil filter with some new SAE 5W-20 engine oil. A well-lubricated engine oil filter O-ring forms a much better seal, prevents oil leakage and makes it easier to remove the filter at the next oil change.

By now almost all used engine oil should have been drained from the engine. If the flow slows down to just an occasional drop, wipe with a cloth and replace the oil drain plug. Tighten it with a 17mm socket wrench or socket wrench to leave it behind. Do not overtighten the oil drain plug as there is a risk that the oil pan will split, crack, or otherwise be damaged.

To remove the old oil filter, use either clean, dry hands or an oil filter wrench. Turn the old oil filter counterclockwise to loosen it. If you have difficulty loosening the old filter, use an oil filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600. Make sure that the oil collector is still under the vehicle when you remove the old oil filter as it contains some used oil. Since used oil may contain carcinogens, try using a different pair of latex or rubber gloves when removing the old oil filter. Carefully open the new oil filter clockwise.

Tighten it by hand and then tighten a little more until it is tight. The 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine in this 2009 Honda Agreement requires 4.4 US quarters of 5W-20 oil. Pour about 4 quarts of the new ProLine SAE 5W-20 oil into a funnel in the engine oil filler opening. Then run the engine (with the oil filler cap fitted), turn off the engine and check the oil level on the dipstick.

To raise the level to about half the distance between the lower “ADD” and upper “FULL” marks on the dipstick, add a little less than half a liter. Check the level again and replace the oil filler cap. To reset the driver’s oil life indicator, first turn the ignition to the “On” position so that all accessories are activated, but do not start the engine. Press the select/reset button until you see the oil life meter.

Then press the select/reset button for about 10 seconds until the oil level counter and maintenance item number “A 1” start flashing. Finally, press the select/reset button for another 5 seconds until the oil level indicator shows “100%”. The last step is to run the engine for a few minutes over a clean spot in your driveway or over an old white towel. Then check if there are any drops or leaks. That is it. You have finished.

Which oil for your Honda

Honda engine oil

There is a full range of Mobil brand engine oils suitable for the various Honda automotive programs, including oils suitable for petrol engines and oils suitable for hybrid engines. There are mobile brand engine oils that are suitable for Honda models such as the Honda Civic, as well as oils that are suitable for the Honda Accord models.

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy™ 0W-20

Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20 is a synthetic high-performance engine oil that is suitable for a range of Honda vehicles, including Honda Civic models and Honda Accord models. Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-20 is a fully synthetic engine oil that meets and exceeds industry specific requirements: ILSAC GF-5 and API SN.

How does synthetic oil help protect my Honda engine

Tests have shown that Mobil 1 can reach all moving parts of the engine faster than some conventional oils. Until your oil circulates completely, friction between dry parts of the engine slowly reduces engine life. Synthetic engine oils such as Mobil 1 start to circulate immediately and protect every moving part in the engine, which over time can lead to savings in maintenance costs.

What oil should I buy for my Honda?

It is important to use the right oil in your car to meet Honda’s manufacturer’s specifications. Using the correct Mobil 1 product during routine maintenance and in accordance with your vehicle’s manual will not affect the Honda manufacturer’s warranty.

SHOULD YOU USE SYNTHETIC OIL, 0W-20? WHAT IS THE DEAL ANYWAY?

To illustrate the extent of this change, you understand that if only a third of US drivers reduced their gasoline consumption by 2%, we would save nearly a billion gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by eight million tons per year. This is equivalent to removing about 1.5 million cars from the road.

In fact, the quality of the oil modified in your vehicle can significantly affect the life of your engine. It can literally be the difference between your car making 250K miles and 500K miles. If you are not planning to sell your car tomorrow, consider these additional examples:

  • At sub-zero temperatures such as 0 F, the quality of the oil can be the difference between circling the engine in 10 seconds or 3 minutes. Most people are already on the motorway 3 minutes after starting their car.
  • The worse the quality of the engine oil, the greater the tendency for it to thicken over time (e.g. picture pasta sauce, which thickens when warmed up several times)! Low-value 5w-20 oil could actually turn into 5w-40 when you change it.
  • Engine cleanliness is significantly influenced by the quality of the engine oil. The highest quality oils are so clean that their detergents can actually clean deposits that have been created by maintenance work in the past, such as the gnawing stain on your favorite shirt that you never thought you would remove!

What causes engine oils to function so differently? The answer lies in their composition, which consists of two main components: raw materials and additives. Both components can have a significant impact on performance. If you do not want to get confused by the following technical discussion, go to the last two paragraphs.

Basic stocks account for about 75% – 80% of the engine oil composition and form the basis for oil performance. The term “synthetic oil” actually refers to the type of base material evaluated by the American Petroleum Institute in groups (i.e. Group I, II, II+, III, IV and V). In general, the quality of the oil increases with the number of groups. These performance enhancements include less heat resistance, better cooling performance, less internal friction (i.e. fuel consumption improvements), etc.

Additives also have an effect on performance and can even be used to compensate for inferior basic stocks. The main problem with additives is that they can only mask and eventually exhaust some of the defects by leaving the original base for protection (e.g. masking the taste of a bad meal by pouring ketchup or other spices over it just to find that it has run out).

The actual performance of oils becomes even more confusing when the term “synthetic” is used. Originally, synthetic engine oil referred to the Group IV precursors, also known as PAO, a fluid developed by an advanced chemical process free of impurities. This synthetic fluid is largely responsible for the performance benefits mentioned above. In 1999, the Better Business Bureau’s Advertising Department expanded the definition of synthetic oils to allow marketers to describe any Group II+ base and beyond as synthetic. Therefore, regardless of what your local installer might tell you, two different people could offer you two different quality products and they could both call them “synthetic”.

Now that you understand what determines the different quality levels of engine oils, the most important question remains. Why do vehicle manufacturers recommend and demand higher quality oils in their vehicles? The answer lies primarily in the efforts of manufacturers and the US government to increase the fuel efficiency of our vehicles. As mentioned earlier, simply improving the quality of your engine oil can increase fuel consumption by more than 2%. Manufacturers are also developing much more complex engines that produce more power in smaller areas and have turbochargers to improve fuel consumption, which significantly increases the heat load on the oil. After all, manufacturers want their vehicles to last, because then more people will continue to buy their cars. The most effective way to keep a vehicle is maintenance, and the most expensive part of your vehicle is protected by your engine oil.

For those of you who have skipped the technical discussion, we will summarize the highlights. Equipment manufacturers are beginning to need higher quality oils in their vehicles to improve fuel economy, protect newer fuel-efficient engines that run hotter, and ultimately provide protection that extends the life of your engine. Some of your vehicles do not require “synthetic” oils, so high quality conventional oils do the job of protecting your engine at the intervals specified by the manufacturer. Nevertheless, just because your vehicles do not need “plastics” does not mean you do not get the same benefits in fuel economy and engine longevity from using better products.

Most importantly, no regulator will require your installer to install the right product in your vehicle, be it conventional or synthetic. You can also call a product “synthetic” that may still not meet the standard for your new vehicle. Confusing, isn’t it? That is why we always recommend that you contact your certified Honda dealer for at least all service questions.

Engine oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean and cool engines. Engine oil types include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic) and recycled oils. Engine oil varies in weight and viscosity as well as in additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sorts engine oils by viscosity – the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer engine oils are rated with two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather performance (winter or “W”).

This oil has a weight of SAE 0W-20, i.e. it has a SAE viscosity of 0 at cold temperatures and a viscosity of 20 at normal operating temperature. Always read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to make sure it is the correct weight of engine oil for your vehicle.

Pennzoil 550046122-3PK is the safest way to keep the engine safe. It allows the original engine noise to be maintained by preventing wear.

Instead of metal sliding, a sliding layer is applied. Therefore, this would be reducing any kind of friction.

The purely synthetic formulation increases performance. Unlike petroleum, it removes and cleans engine sludge.

Undoubtedly, the high ability to maintain viscosity gives it more points than its competitors.

In fact, it is not affected by extreme conditions and this current model is considered one of the best synthetic 0W-20 engine oils on the market.

When it comes to ease of carrying, the oil is at the top.

An ergonomic can makes lifting easy. Filling your oil tank with this can is comfortable thanks to the double handles.

There is no need to worry about quality. This synthetic platinum oil from Pennzoil is trusted.

Pros:

  • Pure synthetic oil
  • Ergonomic oil can
  • Reasonable price
  • Fast delivery

Cons:

  • Fewer kilometers than the competition
