How to choose a battery for a car?

Battery capacity

What is commonly referred to as battery capacity is measured in ampere hours. The larger the vehicle and the more voluminous its engine, the more ampere hours should be available. This is the fundamental parameter that characterizes the energy reserve in the battery. Simply put, this figure shows how many times in a row on a frosty morning you can crank your frosty engine with the starter. Or how long the audio system in your car can play while you are resting in the countryside. For example, a low-capacity battery can be completely sucked out by the morning, while a medium-sized battery will be able to start the engine after a day of powering the speakers and subwoofer.

Sometimes a car owner has an opportunity to use a battery of higher capacity than the regular one – both dimensions and finances allow. But will it not do harm to your car and battery? Definitely not. And whether it is necessary to make such upgrade is a purely individual matter. In our opinion, it is better to pay not for extra capacity in ampere-hours, but for extra reserve capacity (measured in minutes) or for bigger maximum current (measured in amperes).

Maximum inrush current

The value of maximum current (starting current) is written on most modern batteries and looks like 480A (EN), 560A (EN), 600A (EN) on 60 Ah models. Some manufacturers measure inrush current according to DIN method instead of EN, so they have a smaller figure: 510A (EN) corresponds to 300A (DIN). In practice, a higher starting current means that the engine is easier to start. In fact, the faster the starter turns the cold crankshaft, the sooner the engine will come to life. On the other hand, the battery capacity with a low starting current may be enough for five or six start attempts, but all of them will be “sluggish”, with low starter rpm and will not bring success.

The Reserve capacity of the battery at the same time is not declared by all manufacturers. The labeling shows it as 90 min, 100 min and indicates the time during which the battery is able to give the consumers a current of 25 amperes – the parameter to some extent similar to the familiar to us an indicator of capacity in ampere-hours, and the more it is, the better. In practice, knowing the reserve capacity can be important to understand, for example, how long the car can drive with the generator not working.

The cost of the battery

Batteries, even with equal basic parameters but different classes, vary greatly in price. It’s all about the quality of the plates. Economy-class batteries have current collector plates made of lead with the addition of antimony – it is needed for better molding during manufacturing, but spoils some performance indicators. Such batteries require periodic topping up with distilled water, need to be recharged after the car has been idle, and have the lowest starting current among the competition.

Mid-priced batteries are equipped with calcium-added minus plates. Their self-discharge during inactivity is several times lower, the starting current is higher, they age slower and are considered low-maintenance, as they require control of the electrolyte level much less frequently. This category is called the “standard”, it is the most popular among Ukrainian motorists. Identify such a battery can be identified by the marking Ca (calcium) on the body. Sometimes they may not have visible plugs on the case.

Finally, premium batteries are assembled entirely of plates with calcium, which is why they have marked with the symbols Ca-Ca. They can also be distinguished by the absence of plugs on the lid, as such batteries are considered maintenance-free. Such batteries have the longest service life, the lowest self-discharge, and the highest starting current. Sometimes the premium batteries are labeled Silver, which means that they are filled with silver instead of antimony and calcium. The disadvantages are the high price and dislike of deep discharges, so it is better not to buy them for old cars with a rickety electrical system.

The last of these disadvantages do not have the AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, which can also be attributed to the higher price segment. They are distinguished by even higher parameters. From an engineering point of view, the difference is in the electrolyte, which is not in the form of a free-flowing liquid but collected in a glass fiber separator near each plate. Most likely, AGM batteries are the future of starter batteries, but so far their high price is an obstacle to their widespread use.

Best agm car battery

What’s the best charger for my AGM batteries? Well, you will find the answer in this article. We review several excellent models that we believe are best suited to your needs.

You are the owner of a good BMW or a reliable Toyota, but your valued car no longer responds on a beautiful morning. What will be your reaction when you see it dead? You might scratch your head and wonder what went wrong! Would you like to know what went wrong? It’s your decision to buy this battery at first! Shocking! Yes, but you deserved not to do the research on the best car battery models.

Most people are familiar with lead-acid automotive batteries. They are very popular and very inexpensive.

Learn more about the basic battery types

Before jumping into the car battery ratings, make yourself familiar with their types, which are going to be practical when you are going to shop for the best car battery.

The batteries can be roughly divided into two groups – the maintenance-free battery and the high-tech absorber glass mat (AGM). Each type has its own unique advantages that you should know before making a decision.

1. Lead-acid battery (normal)

Lead-acid batteries are widely used and known today. To use the battery type, drivers must regularly refill the water in the electrolyte solution, as the energy source of the battery is the liquid inside. With the rapid pace of technology, new lead-acid batteries require no more water than traditional flooded cells. The new ones are made to keep their fluid for the life of the battery, and their closures are not designed to loosen.

The cost of a lead-acid battery is significantly lower than that of an AGM battery, so lead-acid batteries are widely used. But there are some things you should keep in mind that lead-acid batteries cannot hold a charge for long and they have a low ability to tolerate deep discharge.

2. Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)

Absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries are equipped in more cars due to their outstanding capabilities and intelligent properties. Compared to standard automotive batteries, AGM batteries have the ability to better withstand charge cycles and repeated emptying. AGM batteries have intelligent features such as electronic security, convenience features, fuel-efficient stop-start systems and sockets for mobile electronic devices.

However, a new type of battery called AGM batteries is quickly becoming the go-to car battery of manufacturers, tuners and car enthusiasts. This is mainly due to their performance, durability and low flow rate.

There are many reasons to choose the best AGM battery for a car instead of lead-acid flooded or gelled batteries. So what is an AGM battery? The abbreviation stands for “absorbed glass mat”. The area between the plate and the packaging is filled with glass fibre fabric, which forms a unique cell tissue. It keeps the electrolyte inside through the capillary effect.

The battery always keeps its contents inside and is protected against leakage. The electrolyte would not spill (as with flooded lead-acid batteries) to maintain battery capacity and protect the environment from burning. The battery poles are not sulphated, while the battery and car parts do not suffer from corrosion.

The first AGM batteries were invented by the military for military vehicles and military aircraft at the beginning of the 1980s. Because this type of battery is so superior to the traditional lead-acid battery in terms of both performance and durability, it became commercially very successful. AGM car battery reviews

AGM Batteries Pros

  • Powerful: Compared to other battery types, AGM batteries are powerful and deliver many amperages, making them ideal for demanding cars such as sports cars and muscle cars.
  • Low flow rate: A good auto AGM battery can run up to 8 months at idle without discharging. This is simply not possible with a conventional lead-acid battery.
  • High Cold Crank Amps: Most AGM batteries typically have a high CCA value, making them ideal for use at low temperatures.
  • Very durable: Since the glass fiber and wire mat inside the AGM battery is very tight, there is no movement. This makes it less susceptible to wear and vibration damage.

So it’s time to replace your car battery. Finding a suitable replacement battery can be difficult. There are so many different types of batteries on the market, many of which are less effective than the others. If you are looking for a battery, you want the one that charges quickly and has a long life.

Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) Battery

Over recent years across the market space, Lithium-ion batteries have gained more traction. To those that are unknowing, it can be easy to dismiss the Lithium-ion battery as an expensive alternative to VRLA, if looking at the amp-hour (Ah) rating. Though, Digging deeper, it becomes clear that there is much more than an Ah rating to consider when you want to choose the best battery or batteries for your specific application.

Useful tips for choosing the best car battery

It should be a mistake when in this article of the best car battery reviews, we do not mention useful tips on choosing the best car battery. To help you find out which battery is the best for your needs, here are 4 useful tips for you:

Tip 1: Choose the right battery for your vehicle.

We all know that every vehicle needs a specific type of battery. Each vehicle needs a different power and a different battery size. So you’ll need to check your vehicle’s maintenance manual to find out what type of battery is right for your car.

Tip 2: Choose a maintenance-free battery

With the rapid development of technology, most car batteries today are maintenance-free, which requires no special attention. But there are still some batteries that need to be regularly filled with water. To avoid problems in the future, you should buy a maintenance-free battery if possible.

Tip 3: Buy a battery that has a good reputation.

Buying a battery that has many ratings is a good choice as it is tested by car enthusiasts and consumer groups. All you have to do is read reviews or check consumer reviews on commercial websites that sell the battery to get information about the battery or other types of batteries that are sold there.

Tip 4: Avoid buying old batteries.

Batteries lose their strength even if we store them carefully. Therefore, you should always buy a new one that has been manufactured within the last 6 months to ensure that what you buy is the best car battery at that time.

How to Buy an AGM Car Battery

Compatibility

Even if the AGM battery is technically universally compatible with most vehicles, you should inquire whether the AGM battery you are interested in works with your vehicle or not. Pay particular attention to the current per hour (AH) and make sure it is not too high and suitable for your vehicle.

This is because a battery with a high AH value requires a larger alternator or more time to charge. If you do not use your vehicle, long enough or have a small alternator than buying an AGM battery with a high amperage per hour is counterproductive and in your case a disadvantage.

Reserve capacity

Reserve capacity is one of the most important aspects when buying an AGM battery. Basically, reserve capacity is the number of minutes that a fully charged AGM battery will discharge at normal temperature exactly 25A of current until the battery becomes ineffective and generates a voltage of 10.5V.

Compared to a normal lead-acid battery, the AGM battery has a remarkably high reserve capacity because it is more robust. In general, you should expect a reserve capacity of at least 100 minutes from an AGM battery.

However, this value still depends on your usage. If you do not consume as much electricity in your vehicle, you can safely drive with an AGM battery with lower reserve capacity.

Cold crank amps

In short, the CCA or cold crank amps is the battery’s ability to generate current at cold temperatures. The higher the CCA, the more advantageous the battery is in winter because it is a heavier battery capable of starting the vehicle engine immediately regardless of a low temperature.

In general, an AGM battery of more than 600 CCA is sufficient for people living in cold areas. On the other hand, if your region is generally hot, then you do not have to worry so much about the CCA value in your AGM battery.

Lifetime

Since the AGM battery is an expensive purchase overall, you will want to buy it as rarely as possible. In most cases, battery life is an important factor as it directly determines the amount of money you will spend.

Even if the AGM battery is more robust than the normal lead-acid battery, it must still be changed regularly at certain intervals. Most manufacturers indicate their battery life directly on the battery itself. It ranges from one year to 5 years.

The longer the life of the AGM battery, the better, as it designates a more powerful battery with a lower discharge rate.

However, you must also consider the CCA value if applicable and the rated power if you need it. You should not sacrifice power or CCA for life as you will eventually need to replace all batteries, no matter how powerful or heavy they are.

Brand

When buying an AGM battery, it is recommended to use a brand model. This is because brands generally have better quality control and use higher quality materials in the construction of their AGM batteries.

In addition, you get a rock solid warranty with a good brand, while a nameless battery usually has no warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a car battery work?

The average car battery uses chemical reactions with lead acid to make the energy flow. These are referred to as “SLI” batteries, which stands for “start, light and ignite”. Instead of constantly supplying a lot of power, they give the car an energy boost to power all the electronics. When everything is running, the power is kept stable by the generator.

How often do you need a new car battery?

Batteries can last quite a long time to maintain and usually last five years or longer. But even if it works. It doesn’t work as efficiently as it would if it were new. Most batteries are consumed in just three years of daily use. After three years, consider replacing your battery. After five years it’s definitely time for a replacement as your battery is now unreliable.

How long do AGM batteries last?

The improved chemical structure of the AGM battery ensures a longer life. They should last for three to five years without any problems. The heavy duty models and the properly maintained models can reach a life of eight and even ten years. The battery damaging factors are the following:

Extreme weather conditions. AGM batteries work well in heat or cold, but capacity can be compromised.

Lower spout. Discharging the battery reduces operating efficiency.

Incorrect charging. Improper nutrition leads to overcharging and kills the battery.

How do you know a car battery isn’t good?

There are a few signs you can look for when you’re worried about your battery. The biggest thing is whether your engine starts smoothly or not. If your engine starts but does not start, it is probably your battery that is failing. Apart from your car not starting at all, another thing to keep in mind is that if you’ve had your car jump a lot lately, the battery is likely to fail.

How much do new car batteries cost?

On average, you can expect to spend between $60 and $120 on a battery. Premium batteries cost more than that. For example, valve-regulated lead-acid batteries can cost up to $250.

Conclusion

As we have seen, the AGM battery is an unbeatable battery when it comes to performance, reliability and durability. One of the best things about this type of battery is that it costs almost the same as a high-quality lead-acid battery, but is so much better, especially for those who drive in cold weather.

In addition, this type of battery is ideal for those who do not drive their car for an extended period of time as it has a very low discharge rate. A normal AGM battery should last up to 8 months or more without charging.

Finally, our car AGM battery review above lists some quality models. If you still have not found a suitable battery for your car, we recommend you read this review again.
