You may be asking yourself. What synthetic engine oil can I use for my Harley Davidson? Many oils perform excellent with Harley Davidson motorcycles, including the Harley Davidson oils themselves. However, when it came ta o choice, I had to break down the cost versus efficacy of the oils and the above list is what I came with. If you are looking for the best Harley Davidson oil, we are ready to help you make the right choice. Listed below are the best motorcycle oils to keep your bike’s engine running at peak performance and efficiency.
Why use synthetic motor oil for Harley Davidson?
The oil particles stay suspended and entangled, allowing more contaminants to be trapped. Which prevents sludge at the bottom of the engine and improves lubrication and engine mileage. Synthetic oil also cools cars and lawnmowers.
A Harley Davidson motorcycle engine can heat up to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Often subjected to extreme heat during heat and long hours in traffic.
The increased heat leads to viscosity, which in turn affects the lubricity of the oil. In addition, water and all combustion byproducts also form a slurry, so engine oil must be changed regularly to remove these contaminants. Synthetic oils have additives to withstand these deposits, allowing for longer oil change intervals.

What does Harley Davidson Co. say about engine oil?
Just like any other popular motorcycle manufacturer, Harley Davidson Co. emphasizes that you should only use their branded engine oil. Whether it is conventional mineral oil, semi-synthetic oil, or full synthetic engine oil, Harley officials could not emphasize the use of a select number of brands.
We say it is a marketing tactic. After all, advocacy and word of mouth are always beneficial to the manufacturer in the long run.
However, if you are willing to put two n’ two together by doing some homework, you will know that any high-quality synthetic oil will work well in the engine of your Harley Davidson. However, all Harleys are categorized by engine type. You cannot use a particular type of engine oil for any other HD on the market. If it is a swivel-head engine, it uses the X-type synthetic engine oil; if it is a V Twin engine, it needs the Y-type engine oil – so on and so forth.
We have divided the motor oil types for Harley Davidson motorcycles into the following main categories. Our personal recommendation for a particular type of oil follows.
What kind of oil should I use in my Harley Davidson?
Harley-Davidson recommends SAE 20W50 viscosity oil for “all temperature conditions,” according to the Harley-Davidson website. SAE 20W50 oil covers the widest operating temperature range and is ideal for ambient temperatures from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Is Harley Davidson Oil synthetic?
Motorcycle oils are full synthetic, high-performance motor oils that are specially adapted to the high requirements of your motorcycle engines.
Do you have to use Harley Davidson oil?
Harley-Davidson recommends SAE 60 H-D motorcycle oil for ambient temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. SAE 60 H-D Motorcycle Oil is designed to prevent engine overheating at high temperatures.
What is the best oil for motorcycles?
A motorcycle engine oil requires balanced friction properties, as it must lubricate the wet clutch, which in turn transfers the engine power to the drive train… Therefore, what this means is that you should choose a special motorcycle oil developed for your bike. Check the instruction manual to see if the oil weight is correct.
What does ma2 mean on oil?
- JASO MA – This was the standard for single engines where the wet clutch, gearbox and engine used the same oil.
- JASO MA oils do not contain friction modifiers.
- JASO MB – This lower standard applied to bicycles that use separate oils for engine, clutch and transmission (e.g. Harley Davidson and BMW’s).
- JASO-MA2 – This specification was introduced in 2006 for modern motorcycle engines. In addition to a higher oil standard, the JASO-MA2 approval means that the oil is suitable for use in bicycles with catalytic converters in the exhaust system.
Engine oil for Harley Davidson Motorcycles
All motor engines require oil to lubricate their moving components to improve performance and maintain structural integrity. Oil is also an important factor in the emission of pollutants, so it is essential that the oil you choose for your Harley Davidson motorcycle is optimized for that particular application.
Each engine is designed for different types of oil, in fact, some engines are very specific to the engine oil you use, the older engines won’t work as well on synthetic oils as they do on minerals, and the same goes for modern engines that aren’t allowed to touch mineral oils, and only use specific plastics developed for them.
There are three different types of oil to choose from, and a frequent oil change is a mandatory exercise to maintain engine integrity and overall mileage. Here are the three types of oil:
- Mineral oil
Mineral oils are the original crude oil refined for use in engines. They are the cheapest of the oils and are mainly used in vintage cars. - Semi-synthetic
Semi-synthetic oils are a mixture of synthetic chemicals and refined crude oil. These are the middle base oils that have the best of both compounds combined in a formula. They offer the superior performance of synthetic oil at a price comparable to mineral oil. - Full synthetic
Full synthetic oils are made from chemical compounds that are mixed together to achieve a certain level of performance. Synthetic oils can be produced for very specific requirements as well as for a specific range of applications. This makes them the most expensive oils on the market.
