Engine oil is produced from crude oil and is used for lubricating, cleaning and cooling engines. Engine oil types include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic) and recycled oils. Engine oil varies in weight and viscosity as well as in additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sorts engine oils by viscosity – the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer engine oils are rated with two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather performance (winter or “W”).

This oil has a weight of SAE 5W-40, i.e. it has a SAE viscosity of 5 at low temperatures and a viscosity of 40 at normal operating temperature. Always read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to ensure that this is the correct weight of engine oil for your vehicle.

This oil is a full synthetic oil, i.e. crude oil is not used in its manufacture. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of engine oils refined from crude oil and often offers better mechanical performance than conventional engine oil, including higher gas mileage and less engine wear at extreme temperatures. Due to its complex production process, it can often cost more than conventional engine oil.

Pros:

  • Excellent thermal and oxidation stability reduces oil aging and provides extended drain interval protection.
  • Increased film strength at high temperatures. Reduce engine abrasion and polish holes.
  • Inherent Stay-in-Grade shear stability for wear protection and reduced oil consumption and maintenance of viscosity in heavy high temperature applications.
  • Advanced formulation and viscometry to improve fuel economy

Cons:

  • Oil jugs could have crushed filters

Best Motor Oil For High Mileage Trucks

If you own a high mileage car, then your engine is probably quite worn out at this point. There could be all sorts of problems with your engine. The biggest problem is the gaps between the engine components.

In addition, seals and gaskets begin to tear over time and cause oil leakage. Oil sludge then forms in the engine, which can cause all sorts of problems. Just because you have heard that Honda and Toyota engines last forever does not mean they are immune to leaking oil problems.

So what can you do about it? Well, you can take preventive measures by using better engine oil in your engine. More specifically, it must be a special type of engine oil made for high mileage vehicles.

The oil contains additives that can help older engines stay lubricated better and ensure that their seals are protected. Most importantly, the oil reduces the likelihood of oil sludge accumulating in the engine. As a result, the life of your engine is extended and you can get many more miles out of your car or truck. You may even notice a slight increase in performance.

High Mileage Engines oil

Which oil is best for high mileage engines?

Special oil marked “High Mileage” and recommended for engines over 70,000 miles.

Is synthetic oil good for high mileage engines?

Yes, if the engine has high mileage, it is better to use synthetic oil, which is stated in the car’s specification and not to switch to semi-synthetic oil

Is 5w30 oil thicker than 10w30?

5w30 is used for light duty engines, while 10w30 is used for engines that can withstand higher loads. 10w30 provides a sealing effect in the engine because it is thicker than 5w30 engine oil. Diluent at lower temperatures.

Should I use thicker oil in a high mileage engine?

You do not have to do that. If the oil consumption is not high, e.g. 1-2 liters from replacement to replacement, it is not necessary to use thick oil.

When should I use high mileage synthetic oil?

Synthetic oil can be used for engines with high mileage, even if it is necessary to fill up with a bit of oil from the change to the change of oil in the engine.

How to find the engine oil for a car with mileage?

Before selecting the right engine oil for a vehicle that is in long-term use, you should determine if your vehicle has any problems. What happens to the oil pressure? Does it make any foreign sounds that are not typical for normal engine operation? And so on. If there are no external disruptions to engine performance, we should first take note of the choice of engine oil:

Engine oil selection

Correct choice of oil performance properties. We select oils with the classifications and tolerances recommended for this car model. It is not necessary to choose oils with the minimum requirements (which they are according to SAE, API). It is better to choose the oils of the latest classifications, in the worst case (with limited financial resources) – the “average oils “(as they are according to SAE, API). Although they are inferior in quality to the latest engine oils, their properties are still higher than those of oils with minimum allowable operating requirements (which they are according to SAE, API). In addition, it is impossible to choose oils with obviously inappropriate, underestimated and tolerant values. The new engine oil catalogues also confirm this statement. Please note that the most recent catalogues still contain models of cars of very old production years, but engine oils with old classifications, such as API SF/CC classification you will not find anymore. Therefore, it is better for older cars to use oils of more recent developments and classifications.

SAE viscosity:

This is the main parameter when selecting the motor lubricant. It is not by chance that it is always highlighted in large print on the canister.

The viscosity grade looks like XWY.

The letter W stands for Winter. In combination with the number X in front of it, it indicates at which temperature the oil retains its fluidity and allows the engine to rotate (low-temperature viscosity):

  • 0W – allowed to be used at -35°C and higher;
  • 5W – – -30°C and higher;
  • 10W – – -25°C and higher;
  • 15W – -20°C and higher;
  • 20W – – -15°C and above;

The number Y after W determines the high-temperature viscosity, but it is not so clearly tied to a specific ambient temperature.

Winter oils do not have a Y number on the label. In contrast, summer oils do not have the first two elements.

If all three elements are present in the marking, the oil is classified as multigrade.

The best oil is the one recommended by the engine manufacturer.

Not sure if you need a high mileage oil in your vehicle? You are not alone. If you were looking for “High-Mileage Oil” in the Internet, you would find more than 66 million results. You would probably see ads, price options, a few dozen brands to choose from, and thousands of forum posts.

The problem is that there would be very little information about what makes oil “high mileage”, when it should be used, or even what the differences are in the different brands and options. The aim of this article is to answer as many questions as possible about high mileage oil.

When to use a high mileage oil?

High mileage oils contain additives and seal boosters that reduce leakage (internal and external). Leakage may stop after one or two oil changes. This has the potential to reduce oil spills in your driveway and during the combustion of oil in older engines.

How do they work? High mileage oils contain seal conditioners and additives that cause swelling of O-rings, seals and gaskets. In some cases, older valve guide seals in engines may have reduced the amount of leakage. This can result in lower oil consumption. Many high mileage engine oils contain detergents and claim to have been developed to remove sludge from engines.

Most high mileage oils are formulated to benefit vehicles with a range of 75,000 miles or more. When you should change is ultimately your decision, but you should educate yourself to make the best decision. If you experience blowby, loss of power, cylinder rattling, strange noises, etc., you probably have mechanical faults that should be fixed. These kinds of problems are not something that a high mileage oil can fix.

On the other hand, if you have a high mileage vehicle that has been well maintained and is trying to mitigate more engine wear with realistic expectations, a high mileage engine oil might be the right choice for you. Just do not think that a high mileage oil is a “miracle weapon” for the mechanical wear of your engine.

What is a high mileage?

There are no definitive guidelines as to what is to be regarded as high mileage. With the technology available today, standard road vehicles can withstand up to 300,000 miles or even 400,000 miles.

It is well known that motorway miles put less strain on an engine than city miles, and research seems to support this. Highway miles have fewer starts and stops. The engine can also reach a constant temperature and operate at maximum efficiency over a long period of time.

Urban traffic is exactly the opposite. For example, an engine with 80,000 miles can wear as much as an engine with 150,000 miles. It all depends on how the vehicle was driven and maintained.

Some people may consider switching to a high mileage oil at 200,000 miles, while others may want to switch to a high mileage oil at 80,000 miles. For the average driver, anything over 100,000 miles could certainly be considered a high mileage vehicle. Best synthetic Motor Oil

best motor oil for high mileage vehicles

Use of synthetic oil in high mileage engines

If you switch from a conventional mineral oil to a synthetic oil, leakage may occur depending on the synthetic material used and the type of seals in the engine. This can be caused by removing seal failures or residue buildup from areas where a leak has previously been sealed. Synthetic oils have evolved over the years and engine oil manufacturers are considering this, so this issue is becoming less and less of a problem.

Differences between oil brands with high mileage

Since the exact formulations are not available, it may be helpful to review the safety data sheets of oil manufacturers for high mileage oils. The information below is based on data from the SDS for 10W-30 oil from nine of the best-known engine oil manufacturers.
