It just takes a whiff. It could be an old dirt bike starting fresh from the warehouse or an old scooter rolling by. Either way. As soon as the two-stroke exhaust hits your nose, it splits your face into a big, toothy smile. That stuff literally gets under your skin.

But what do you smell? And why is it so stimulating?

From a physiological point of view, the answer is simple. The process of smelling is closely linked to emotions and associative learning. And unlike our other senses, it is directly connected to the limbic system; even before you recognize an odor, the olfactory bulb has already triggered a memory and the associated feeling, a real primal reaction. So if you grew up with motorcycles, your brain could connect two-strokes with the warmth of family, the pride of winning a race or the satisfaction of turning a carburetor. Getting fed up with the stuff can be comforting at the neural level.

But the magic of the distinctive scent of two-stroke engines could be even more. So says Kelly Jones, the New York perfumer behind Kelly + Jones, an experimental fragrance line available in stores like Urban Outfitters and Garmentory. When she was asked to analyze burning synthetic two-strokes for motorcyclists, her trained nose picked up a number of scents, including benzoin and balm (tree resins), cade oil (a juniper species) and a hint of patchouli (yes, patchouli). For Jones, the underlying figure here was revealing. She notes that tree resins were the very first fragrances to be created, dating back to ancient civilizations. Benzoin and balm have long been used to make incense, and cade oil is a well-known antiseptic.

Available 2-stroke oil types

There are currently four types of 2-stroke oil, and it is important to know which one to choose if you want to get the best performance from your bike and extend the life of the engine. The four available types are petrol, castor oil, synthetic or ester oil, and semi-synthetic oil, and we will examine them all below.

  • Petrol or mineral oil is more suitable for chain saws and mowers and should not be used in off-road motorcycles or ATVs. Mineral oil does not have the lubricating properties required for the optimum performance of your off-road motorcycle engine.
  • Castor oil, on the other hand, has exceptionally good lubricating properties and is able to protect the engine from heat. The only drawback of this type is that it can be quite dirty and over time can cause the piston rings, power valves, and other castor-based components to stick together and leave considerable carbon deposits.
  • This fully synthetic or ester-based oil is a favorite among motorsport drivers as it blends the best with petrol and gives you consistent performance even in cold weather. The disadvantage of the synthetic option is that it does not have the same heat protection and lubricating properties as the castor oils.
  • Finally, the semi-synthetic option is an excellent choice for riders who want to get the best of both worlds in terms of combustion and lubrication properties. In simpler terms, this alternative gives you a mixture of synthetic and castor oil. The disadvantage is that not all mixtures are as efficient and you should be careful when buying this type of oil.
