The Newbie Car Owner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Ford Motor Oil

5W-20 or 10W-30? Synthetic or conventional? Cheap or expensive? Similar to choosing a pair of sneakers, what you decide to put in the engine of your Ford can have a big impact on how it behaves on asphalt. If your engine oil is too viscous, you run the risk of waking up to a car that will not tip over at all; if it is too thin, you may need to change your oil more regularly due to a faster burn rate. Read our new review about Best oil for Subaru Outback!

However, that is just the tip of the engine oil iceberg. Here are some additional helpful advice on choosing the right auto oil for your Ford.

Knowing the best oil for use in your Ford is very important as the oil is one of the most important elements to keep the engine of your ford healthy. Engine oil is sometimes compared to the fact that it is as important for an engine as blood is for a body. The engine oil in your Ford keeps the parts of the engine moving while protecting them, so it is important that you choose the right oil for your ford.

Various oils required by Ford

In most cases, for Ford vehicles you will need to search for a 5W/30 engine oil with ACEA specifications A5/B5 & A1/B1 that complies with Ford specification FORD WSS-M2C 913 – C. However, since you cannot say for certain that this oil will meet the requirements for all Ford engines; it is advisable to consult your owner’s manual or a lubricant consultant such as our app “Which Oil? It is also advisable that you always look for the best international branded oils that have Ford’s full approvals for the specification your car needs, as they are a guaranteed high quality oil that has been fully approved by your car manufacturer. This is particularly advantageous if your Ford is still under warranty, as the use of a non-approved oil means that you run the risk of losing your warranty if the oil that indicates that it meets the requirements does not pass the test that might take place during testing.

XW-XX: What does it all mean?

The anatomy of the engine oil can be confusing. For the nonprofessional, the first set on the front (XW) represents the flow rate or viscosity of the oil at 0 degrees Celsius. The second set (XX) represents the viscosity at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. For example, 10W-30 oil thickened more than 5W-20 in cold weather, but 5W-20 thinned faster than 10W-30 at higher temperatures – without considering the additives commonly found in engine oils.

So, which oil is best for your car?

As a new car owner, the biggest concern when choosing your engine oil is your location. With the extreme heat we get, you might want to invest in engine oil with a higher viscosity and a higher temperature class like 10W-40. However, when removing engine oil, always follow your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If full synthetic 5W-20 requires it, then use full synthetic 5W-20. These automotive engineers know what they are doing (hopefully).

Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 is what Ford now uses. It is a high quality, full synthetic engine oil from a scientific point of view.

Formulated with the ultimate active cleaning technology. It works harder than conventional engine oils to continuously prevent the accumulation of dirt and mud while protecting sensitive exhaust treatment systems. For maximum responsiveness and improved performance so your engine can reach its full potential before the next oil change.

2005-2007 Ford Focus Oil Change

The following procedure is correct for all Duratec engines in the Ford Focus, including the 2.3-liter engine in the 2004-2007 models. As indicated on the oil filler cap, use 5W-20 oil when adding or changing oil. There are a number of different oil filters from different manufacturers that will work for the focus, so you may want to consult the parts counter at your local auto parts store.

Changing oil at 3,000-mile intervals has always been common, but modern oil and oil filters allow much more time between changes. As long as you check your oil level regularly, you can easily reach it 5,000 miles with conventional oil and over 7,500 miles with synthetic oil.

1. Preparation. Use ramps or lift stands to lift the front of the vehicle and lock the rear wheels so that the vehicle does not move.

Remove the oil filler cap by turning it counterclockwise 1/4 turn and lifting it off the valve cap.

2. Drain the Old Oil.

  • Locate the oil pan drain plug under the vehicle. It is a 13 mm hexagonal bolt pointing to the rear of the vehicle.
  • Place an oil drain pan under the oil pan to collect the draining oil. Remember to place it towards the rear of the car as the oil will leak from the oil pan in a stream.
  • Be very careful when working under a car that has been in operation recently because the oil pan and transmission will be very hot.
  • Loosen the oil pan drain plug with a 13 mm socket wrench until it loosens and the oil drains out of the oil pan.
  • Look for glossy stains in the draining oil. Small metal flakes can be a serious problem in your engine.

3. Flush out Any Remaining Old Oil

  • This step is only necessary if you want to flush all the used oil out of your engine. You may want to consider this if it has been a long time since you last changed the oil or if a foreign liquid has been poured into the filling port.
  • Place a funnel in the oil-filling opening in the valve cover.
  • Pour a quarter of the oil into the funnel and allow it to drain completely and collect in the oil drain pan.
  • Since very little of this oil remains in your engine, you can use the cheapest oil you can find.

4. Finish up Oil Pan and Move to the Oil Filter

  • Wipe and reinsert the oil pan drain plug. Use moderate force, but do not overtighten the screw.
  • You can continue to tighten the screw at any time if you notice oil leaking from the plug. However, a cracked oil pan is a much more expensive repair.
  • Position the oil pan under the oil filter.

5. Removing the old oil filter

  • Turn the oil filter counterclockwise (looking up) to remove it.
  • If your filter is set too tight to release by hand, you may need to remove it with an oil filter wrench or belt wrench.
  • The oil begins to run down the sides of the oil filter. It is at your discretion whether to drain the filter slowly or remove it quickly this way. Note that the filter itself still contains oil that must be drained.
  • Adjust the old filter in your oil drain pan with the gasket facing down to allow the oil to drain out of the pan.
  • After removing the oil filter, carefully check the old filter and the filter seat of the engine for the seal of the old filter. Sometimes this remains in place and is a guaranteed major leak if it is not removed before the new filter is installed.
  • Drain the rest of the oil from the engine and collect it in the oil drain pan.

6. Preparation and installation of the new oil filter

  • Apply a small amount of clean oil to the rubber seal of the new oil filter.
  • The use of gloves is strongly recommended. If oil gets on your skin, wash your hands thoroughly immediately.
  • Wipe the oil filter installation location and install the new filter by turning it clockwise until you can no longer tighten it.

7. Fill with new fresh oil.

  • Pour five liters of 5W-20 oil into a funnel in the oil-filling opening.
  • Replace the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise 1/4 turn.
  • Start your car and let it run. Check that there is no oil leaking under the vehicle. If you notice any leaks, tighten the drain plug and be careful not to overtighten it and open the oil pan.
  • Close the bonnet and lower the car back to the ground: you are done!

8. Disposal

  • Drain all oil from the old oil filter for 12-24 hours.
  • Take your old oil and filter to a recycling facility. Most auto parts shops and garages will accept this free of charge for you. In addition, some cities and/or counties have a service where you can collect used oil and filters from your home. For more information, visit the American Petroleum Institute’s website on the collection and recycling of used engine oil.
  • Do not just dump used oil in the garbage. It is a hazardous waste product that must be disposed of properly.
