Engine oils must be able to react consistently to changing environments in your engine. At every moment of the journey, your engine oil must be able to respond to the needs of the different metal-to-metal contact points in your engine with different requirements, pressures and temperatures. Castrol EDGE Extended Performance – Castrol’s premium fully synthetic oil is uniquely engineered with fluid-titanium technology to provide unsurpassed protection for critical engine parts and ensure optimum performance – with strength to enable an extended drain interval of up to 20,000 miles. Longer service is not recommended for heavy service applications such as racing, frequent towing or towing, commercial use, extremely dirt/dusty conditions or excessive idling.
Engine oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean and cool engines. Engine oil types include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic) and recycled oils. Engine oil varies in weight and viscosity as well as in additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sorts engine oils by viscosity – the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer engine oils are rated with two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather performance (winter or “W”).
This oil has a weight of SAE 0W-20, i.e. it has a SAE viscosity of 0 at cold temperatures and a viscosity of 20 at normal operating temperature. Always read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to ensure that this is the correct weight of engine oil for your vehicle.
This oil is a fully synthetic oil, i.e. crude oil is not used in its manufacture. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of engine oils refined from crude oil and often offers better mechanical performance than conventional engine oil, including higher gas mileage and less engine wear at extreme temperatures. Due to its complex production process, it can often cost more than conventional engine oil.
Pros:
- 20,000 miles between dewatering intervals guaranteed.
- Recommended for heavy duty applications such as towing, high performance driving, frequent short trips or idling, dusty, humid or extreme temperature conditions.
- Developed with fluid-titanium technology to provide maximum strength under pressure.
- Reduces metal-to-metal contact across a range of travel speeds.
- Reduces the formation of engine deposits to maximize engine response.
- The best advanced fully synthetic products you can buy.
Cons:
- Difficult to find it in the store

Only a third of U.S. drivers reduce their gasoline consumption by 2%, we would save nearly a billion gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by eight million tons per year. This is equivalent to removing about 1.5 million cars from the road. Read our review about Best oil for Toyota Prius!
In fact, the quality of the oil modified in your vehicle can significantly affect the life of your engine. It can literally be the difference between your car making 250K miles and 500K miles.
Basic stocks account for about 75% – 80% of the engine oil composition and form the basis for oil performance. The term “synthetic oil” actually refers to the type of base material evaluated by the American Petroleum Institute in groups (i.e. Group I, II, II+, III, IV and V). In general, the quality of the oil increases with the number of groups. These performance enhancements include less heat resistance, better cooling performance, less internal friction (i.e. fuel consumption improvements), etc.
Most importantly, no regulatory body requires your installer to install the right product in your vehicle, whether conventional or synthetic. You can also call a product “synthetic” that may still not meet the standard for your new vehicle. Confusing, isn’t it? That is why we always recommend that you contact your certified Honda dealer for at least all service questions.

Which oil should I buy for my Honda?
It is important to use the right oil in your car to meet Honda’s manufacturer’s specifications. Using the correct Mobil 1 product during routine maintenance and in accordance with your vehicle’s manual will not affect the Honda manufacturer’s warranty.
Synthetic is definitely better than regular especially if you do a lot of driving.

Engine oil viscosity and description
Product description
0W-20 High-quality fuel-efficient oil for gasoline engines
0W-30 High-quality low-viscosity oil for diesel engines
5W-40 High-quality engine oil for older and more powerful engines
Hybrid petrol engine oil. Unique engine oil that is only available from Honda for petrol hybrid engines.
Green diesel engine oil. Unique engine oil only available from Honda for 1.6 diesel engines.
Try to use the lightest viscosity your engine can handle, starting at 0-30, regardless of mileage. If you use the recommended 5-30 and lose oil, do not use 0-30, otherwise 0-30 will give you most MPG, easiest starts even on very cold days and the engine will last forever and stay clean. When you start losing oil at 0-30 (to be checked again and again at 100, 200, 500 and 1000 miles), start adding the lowest viscosity to stop and hold leaks. When changing oil, rinse and drain thoroughly and use the best oil filter you can find.

What kind of oil should I use?
Always use original Honda oil available from your Honda dealer. If Honda Genuine Oil is not available, it is very important to select an oil with the Starburst certification symbol shown on the left. This symbol indicates that the oil meets the latest performance requirements of the automotive and oil industries. Oil carrying the Starburst offers superior performance in terms of deposition and sludge protection, wear protection and oil life. These oils also protect the environment by extending the life of your emissions system and saving energy through better fuel economy. Also read: Best Oil For Honda Motorcycle
American Honda recommends the use of original Honda oils for your vehicle. This oil meets the Starburst performance requirements listed above but is also subjected to a series of Honda-specific tests to ensure optimum performance and compatibility with your Honda vehicle.
Refer to the Owner’s Manual to determine the correct weight class (viscosity) for your Honda. Your vehicle is designed for this specific weight class. Make sure that the weight indicated on the label of your oil corresponds exactly to this recommendation before using it in your engine.
What about synthetic oil?
The main difference between normal and synthetic oil is that synthetic oil is more resistant to decomposition than normal oil. This allows a much longer oil change interval.
From 2011 onwards, most new Honda vehicles will be factory-fitted with Honda’s synthetic oil 0w-20.
When using synthetic engine oil, the above requirements should be met – it must display the Starburst symbol and correspond to the weight class recommended in your Owner’s Manual. Best engine oil for car
How often should I change the oil in my Honda?
Honda no longer has a “recommended maintenance schedule”. Instead, to save time and money, the Honda Maintenance Minder system tracks the life of the engine oil and lets vehicle owners know when the engine oil needs to be replaced and maintenance is due. The Honda Maintenance Minder system shows the service life of the engine oil in percent. Your vehicle starts with a 100% oil life, and if you put miles on the vehicle, the percentage is reduced to 0%, signaling that the oil’s life is over.
There is absolutely no point in changing your oil more often than recommended in the owner’s manual. This only increases your operating costs and unnecessarily burdens the environment by increasing the amount of oil disposed of.
Be sure to change your oil when it is due. Oil eventually deteriorates and loses its ability to protect your engine due to heat, friction and exposure to exhaust components. Engine oil contains special additives to improve the performance of the oil, and these additives are also degraded or consumed with increasing distance and time. Failure to perform proper maintenance may result in engine damage.

Alternatively, you can drive the front of the vehicle on wheel ramps. When doing this, be careful to lock the rear wheels.
To facilitate your oil change, consider lifting the car as high as you can. - Place a jack stand directly behind the jack on the pinch weld.
Slowly lower the car to the jacking position and remove the jack.
Many hydraulic jacks are lowered by placing the open end of the handle over a knob and turning it counterclockwise. Read the instruction manual for your jack if you do not know how to lower it.
!Never work under a car that is carried by only one jack. The jack may slip or fail, resulting in serious injury or death. - Locate the 17 mm hex oil drain plugs on the back of the oil pan facing the rear of the vehicle.
Honda made life a little easier for everyone and embossed the words “engine oil” on the sump with an arrow pointing to the drain plug.
Place an oil drain pan under the oil pan so that it holds the draining oil. - ! Always wear protective gloves and goggles when working with engine oil. Be careful if your car has been driven recently as the engine and exhaust can be very hot. Keep rags or towels nearby to wipe off spilled liquids.
Loosen the drain screw 3/4 of a turn with a 17 mm ring spanner.
Loosen the drain plug by hand until it is free and the oil escapes from the oil pan.
Pay attention to the dripping oil for shiny stains. Metal flakes in the oil are part of normal engine wear – but an excessive amount of metal flakes could indicate a serious problem. Consider saving your oil and sending a sample to a laboratory for analysis. - While the old oil is draining, wipe the drain plug with a clean cloth or towel and remove the gasket from the old drain plug.
Place a new seal for the drain plug over the threads and make sure it is large enough to reach the head of the drain plug.
Any commercially available 1/2″ metal or plastic drain plug gasket is suitable as long as it fits over the threads. - Once the oil has slowed to a drop, wipe the area around the drain plug with a clean cloth or towel.
Replace the drain plug and tighten with a ring spanner until it is tight. Alternatively, use a torque wrench to check that the plug is tightened to specification. The torque for the drain plug is 29 ft./lbs.
Do not overtighten the drain plug. You may risk removing the threads or damaging the oil pan. It is better that it is too loose and not too tight, because you can always go back and tighten it later. If in doubt, check the torque with a torque wrench. - Fit the oil filter to the front, passenger side of the oil pan.
Place the oil drain pan under the oil filter.
Loosen and remove the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. If the filter is too tight to be removed manually, loosen it with an oil filter wrench.
Have many rags at hand, as this is probably the most messy part of the procedure.
The oil filter is still filled with oil, so hold the open end up until you are ready to fill it into the oil drain pan. - Dip a clean finger with gloves in a new bottle of oil and apply a thin layer of oil to the seal of the new oil filter.
This layer of oil prevents the seal from shrinking when tightened and makes it easier to remove the filter at the next oil change.
Wipe the oil filter threads and the engine contact surface with a clean cloth or towel.
Place the new filter on the threads and turn it clockwise by hand until it is firmly seated. - Remove the oil drain pan under the vehicle.
Pick up the vehicle so that it no longer stands on the jack.
Remove the jack stand and slowly lower the jack until it no longer supports the vehicle. - To open the hood, tighten the hood release lever in the driver side door.
Locate the hood release lever under the hood. Press the lock with one hand while lifting the hood.
Support the canopy upwards by inserting the canopy support rod into the hole marked with an arrow. - Remove the oil filler cap on the passenger side of the engine by turning it counterclockwise and then lifting it from the oil filler hole.
Insert a funnel into the filler opening to prevent spillage when filling the new oil. - Add 4 liters of 5W-20 oil to the funnel.
Make sure you use 5W-20 oil. Although the use of slightly different qualities works, it is best to use the type specified in the instruction manual.
Replace the oil filler cap. - Remove the orange measuring stick under the hood.
Wipe the dipstick down with a cloth or towel to make sure you get a true reading.
Put the dipstick back into its hole and remove it.
The amount of oil on your dipstick determines the oil level. The top of the hatched area is the maximum amount of oil you should have, while the bottom of the hatched area is the minimum.
Our oil level seems to be slightly high. However, the oil has not yet had time to seep into the corners and edges of the engine. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute. Turn the engine off and check for leaks underneath. Check the oil again. Now the filter is full of oil, the level should be close to the full mark on the dipstick. - Raise the hood so that you can lower the support rod of the hood to its rest position again.
Carefully lower the hood until it engages in the secondary locking mechanism.
Press firmly on the edge of the hood until the primary lock engages. - When it is time to change the oil in your Civic, the service light (orange wrench) appears on your dashboard and a B1 message indicating an oil life of 15% or less.
To reset the oil life indicator, press and hold the SEL/RESET button for about 10 seconds until the Oil Life message starts flashing. Release the SEL/RESET button and hold it down again for about 5 seconds until the oil life % is reset to 100. - Drain all oil from the old oil filter for 12-24 hours.
- Take your old oil and filter to a recycling facility. Most auto parts shops and garages will accept this free of charge for you. In addition, some cities and/or counties have a service where you can collect used oil and filters from your home. For more information, visit the American Petroleum Institute’s website on the collection and recycling of used engine oil.
It is a good idea to include the date and maintenance performed in the owner’s manual so that you can keep records for your dealer in the event of a warranty claim.
