The best options for changing hybrid oil

Hybrid cars are a mixture of electric and gas cars. More and more people are switching to these vehicles because they are low-emission and very economical. However, the hybrid oil change is one of the most important factors for maintaining such efficiencies. Do you have a Honda Civic? So read our new review about Best oil for Honda Civic.

Hybrid oil change

The lubrication requirements for the engines of hybrid vehicles are unique. The engines of these vehicles must be very powerful and are designed to withstand high friction. Most of them can stop immediately at red lights and other stop signals and then start immediately. Such harsh operating conditions put considerable strain on the engines and accelerate harmful deposits. For these reasons, changing the hybrid oil must be done regularly to ensure its long lasting performance.

Recommended oil for hybrid vehicles

If you drive a hybrid vehicle, you should know what types of oil would help the engine improve its performance.

Low thickness oil

The degree of viscosity is the unit that determines the thickness of the engine oil. Most manufacturers recommend the use of synthetic oil with a thickness range of 0W-20. This means that the oil should not exceed the range of 20W viscosity class. On the other hand, most traditional cars use oil with a viscosity of 30W.

However, the hybrid oil change mainly depends on the make and model. You should read the owner’s manual to find out the recommended type and grade of oil. You may damage the engine and void the vehicle’s warranty by using the wrong oil or quality.

If you only buy a new hybrid car such as the Toyota Prius. You might think about Toyota Prius oil type to change after the first 5,000 miles or six months. The Toyota Prius engine oil recommendation for the latest models requires 0W-20 or 5W-20 engine oils. We recommend Mobil 1™ 0W-20 as the industry leader Synthetic Engine Oil. Its properties improve engine performance better than conventional engine oils. It is also manufactured for the Toyota engine.

Best engine oil for toyota prius hybrid

Synthetic engine oil

In addition, the manufacturers and hybrid mechanics recommend this type of oil. Synthetic oil is more expensive than conventional oil, but it is thinner, reduces sludge deposits and forms a coating for the engine parts to keep abrasion to a minimum.

Many mechanics also recommend it for the traditional car oil change. It significantly improves engine condition, improves fuel efficiency, reduces CO2 footprint and increases vehicle life. Normally you have to change the oil every 3000 miles or here months, whichever comes first. However, the use of synthetic oil extends this period to 5,000-7,000 miles or every six months.

The hybrid oil change is necessary to keep them in operation for a long time. However, it will be better to read your car’s manual and contact an experienced hybrid mechanic to find out what type and quality of oil will be the best choice for your vehicle.

SAE 0W-20 synthetic is recommended for many reasons, regardless of local climate.

Low-viscosity engine oil circulates the engine much faster than 10W-30 during engine start-up (reduces engine wear) and also warms up faster to achieve optimum engine operating temperature – reducing emissions and improving fuel economy.

Best oil filter for toyota prius

Engine oil grades for Toyota Prius

The Prius engine does not run as often or idle as normal gasoline vehicles, especially in start-stop traffic and low speeds below 70 km/h – another reason why 0W-20 is more suitable for the Prius.

However, it is true that when the pump is in bypass (and thus pressure limited), a thinner oil circulates faster. The difference between 5W30 and 5W20 would be quite small, but yes, in very cold starts oils with lower viscosity circulate faster.

The oil change every 5000 miles with synthetic oil is a good practice. Synthetic oil retains its lubricity longer than conventional oil, but is contaminated with the same speed.

5W-30 is the recommended viscosity for the Toyota Prius engine, written in the second generation Prius manual (2004~2008).

Amazing amounts of information about your Prius can be found by simply reading the instruction manual. From everything about how your radio works, to what the strange symbols on your dashboard mean, to…what for…what viscosity and type of oil you should use in your Prius engine. Don’t you have the manual? Visit the Toyota website and you can download a.pdf of the manual and …of the service requirements…FREE.

2010-2017 Toyota Prius Oil Change Guide

The oil change on this late model Toyota Prius’s usually takes about 25-35 minutes. The use of a car lift and the lining of all your parts and tools in a clean working area make the work even faster. Synthetic motor oil on sale

Before starting, make sure you have all the parts and tools you need to complete the oil change. These are listed above. You may need to buy some tools when you perform this oil change for the first time yourself, but they are a worthwhile investment that you can use again and again throughout the life of your vehicle.

Preparing for the oil change

  • Estimated time: 2 minutes
  • Required tools: plastic ramps, jacks or car lifts

Start by driving your Prius onto the plastic ramps or the car lift, no matter which one you have.

If you use plastic ramps: Drive slowly up the ramps to make sure you do not accidentally roll over the edge when you arrive at the end. Put a block of wood behind one or both rear wheels as an additional safety measure to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards.

When using a jack: Find the correct lifting point for your vehicle using the instruction manual. Once you have lifted the vehicle with the jack, slide at least 2 jack stands under the vehicle to hold it securely.

When using a car lift: Wait until you have completed the following steps before lifting the car.

Apply parking brake and pull hood release. Open the hood of the car and place the hood support rod on it to keep it open. Locate the oil cap and remove it.

Tip: Adjust the oil cap on your hood latch so that the hood does not close at the end of the oil change if you forget to replace the hood.

Removing the oil cap at this time will drain the oil pan more quickly if you later remove the drain plug. If you are using a car lift, continue and lift it at this point.

Drain the Old Engine Oil

Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Tools Needed:

  • Oil Drain Pan
  • 14mm Wrench or Socket
  • Towels or Rags

If your Prius has a plastic lower engine cover (also known as a glide plate), remove the pressure pin clips with a flat head screwdriver or a small pick to open the cover and reveal the drain plug and oil filter housing.

The drain plug is located on the back of the oil pan and accepts a 14mm socket wrench or wrench.

Position your drain pan before loosening the screw. Note that if your vehicle has been in use for a long time, the oil will leak quite warmly and will tend to shoot out quickly first and then slow down to a steady drop, so adjust your oil pan accordingly.

A few things to keep in mind here: The plug can be quite tight due to the weather or excessive tightening. Try to get into the best possible position to get the most leverage to remove the stopper.

Start with an even, even pressure. If this does not work, try making a fist with your free hand and hitting it against the underside of the hand holding the wrench. This extra bit of force can sometimes release it. If not, you may need a switch bracket.

Make sure you use the correct wrench size and that it sits correctly on the screw, otherwise you can remove the screw.

Once the drain plug has loosened, loosen it by hand for the rest of the way. There is a washer that also comes loose… if you cannot see it the first time you remove the screw, it has probably fallen into your drain pan or onto the floor, or can still stick to the drain pan.

Tip: If you take our drip tray and drill a hole in the side of the rear handle, you can easily store your drain plug there while waiting for the oil to drain.

It may take about 5 minutes for the oil to leak. Make sure you extract as much of the old oil as you can. While waiting, clean the drain plug. Also, use a cloth or disposable towels and clean any areas where oil may have been sprayed onto the engine. If you do not do this, you may notice a burning smell the next time you start your car.

Once the oil has leaked, retighten the drain plug and a brand new washer onto the drain pan. If you have a torque wrench, the screw should be tightened to 25 nm.

Replace the old oil filter.

Estimated time: 7 minutes

Required tools:

MX2320 Oil filter wrench

3/8″ ratchet & extension

Remove the oil filter using a 27 mm socket wrench and a 3/8″ ratchet with the MX2321 oil filter wrench. The wrench should match the indexing straps on the side of the filter.

These housings can be VERY tight, so you may need to use a separator rail with the 27mm base to expose them.

Once the filter is free, rinse it by hand. Take a cloth or disposable towel and wipe the housing surface clean.

Tip: Once everything has been cleaned, you can remove the drip tray and move it to the side so that nothing falls in and you do not trip over it.

Replace the paper filter cartridge and the large O-ring at the bottom of the filter cap threads.

Put a bead of fresh oil on your finger and apply to the large O-ring.

Hand tighten and tighten the oil filter. You can then use the oil filter wrench to make sure it is tight, but be very careful not to overtighten the housing. You do not need to put oil in the filter housing before replacing it.

Refill the engine oil

Estimated time: 5 minutes

Required tools:

Oil funnel

Now you can grasp the engine oil funnel and install it where your oil cap has threads.

Add about 4 liters of 0W-20 oil.

After you have added this amount of oil, check the dipstick to see if you are in the baseball stadium to get the correct amount of oil. If in doubt, it is better to add oil slowly and check a few times rather than overfilling.

Once the dipstick reading is correct, remove the funnel. You can clean it by taking a cloth and wiping it out.

Tip: Start your Prius and let the engine run for a few seconds to build up oil pressure and fill the oil filter. Then switch off your engine and top up the oil, check the dipstick until it reaches the full mark.

Then replace the oil cap and lower the hood.

Resetting the oil change indicator

  1. Switch on the ignition without starting the engine.
  2. Press the “Trip” button on the steering wheel until you see “Trip A” on the display.
  3. Switch the ignition “off”.
  4. Press the start button without touching the brake and hold down the “Km/H Mph” button.
  5. Press and hold the Km/H Mph button while the reset is running and until you are told that the reset is complete.

Finishing

Empty all the oil from the old filter and throw it and the old seals in the trash. You can usually dispose of the old oil that is still in your drip tray at a local lubricant store. For transport, you can fill the old oil from the sump into the empty bottle(s) of oil that you have after refilling the engine with new oil. Be sure to mark this bottle with a large permanent marker so that you know it is old oil and should not be reused.

Also, make sure to reset the oil gauge on the dashboard.

If you have a small sticker in the top left corner of your car that registers the last oil change date and mileage, delete it and update it with an erasable marker.

Tip: Depending on how often the manufacturer recommends an oil change, make it easy for yourself and enter the mileage when you need your next oil change.
