Mazda 3 Owners Manual: Recommended Oil

U.S.A., Canada and Puerto Rico

Use SAE 0W-20 engine oil.

Mazda original oil is used in your Mazda vehicle. Mazda Original 0W-20 Oil is required to achieve optimum fuel economy.

For maintenance service, Mazda recommends Mazda Original Parts and Castrol (USA only).

Use only SAE 0W-20 oil “Certified for Gasoline Engines” from the American Petroleum Institute (API).

Oil with this brand symbol complies with current engine and emission protection standards and fuel consumption requirements of the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), composed of U.S. and Japanese automotive manufacturers.

Except the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Best motor oil.

Use SAE 5W-30 engine oil.

Oil tank labels provide important information.

A major contribution of this type of oil to fuel economy is to reduce the amount of fuel required to overcome engine friction.

For maintenance service, Mazda recommends Mazda Original Parts and Castrol (Mexico only).
(Mexico)

Use SAE 5W-30 engine oil. If SAE 5W-30 engine oil is not available, use SAE 5W-20 engine oil.

The quality designation SM or ILSAC must appear on the label.

NOTE The engine oil should be changed by an authorized Mazda dealer.

See Introduction to the Owner’s Responsibility to Protect Your Investment.

As long as the oil meets the specifications required by the manufacturer, it does not matter which brand you use.

SkyActiv engines (2.0L/2.5L) are quite gentle with their oil and we would say they are not too picky what brand of 0W20 you use. We think the owners are pickier (not a bad thing).

Whatever you would normally, run unless you had oil leaks. The only difference between high mileage oil and regular oil is that it contains “swelling agents” that swell your seals to stop oil leaks.

Mazda recommends the use of [SAE 5w30] engine oil in engines equipped with turbo. Mazda recommends synthetic engine oils in all their vehicles. You can also use a high mileage or prolonged use engine oil for older models or cars used for long distance driving.

What is SAE 5W-30?

SAE 5W-30 is a special type of engine oil. The letters and numbers indicate that the oil meets certain standards and conveys specific properties of the oil.

SAE

SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers, an organization that defines the temperature requirements for the evaluation of oils. The SAE designation shows that the oil meets the requirements that allow the technical standards of the engine oil to be standardized.

Viscosity class

“W” stands for winter, and it shows that the oil meets the SAE low temperature requirements of 0 degrees Fahrenheit. The “5” is the viscosity class of the oil in cold weather, which indicates how thick or thin the oil is when trying to start an engine at low temperatures. The “30” indicates the viscosity class of the oil at the SAE high temperature requirement set to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Viscosity differences

A 5W oil is the usual choice for winter use, as it has a lower viscosity or thickness than 10W oil at low temperatures and flows more easily through the moving parts of a vehicle engine. 5W-30 has a lower viscosity than 10W-40 oil in both cold and hot weather. Be sure to use the oil viscosity specified in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
