Engine oils must be able to react consistently to changing environments in your engine. At every moment of the journey, your engine oil must be able to respond to the needs of the different metal-to-metal contact points in your engine with different requirements, pressures and temperatures. Castrol EDGE Extended Performance – Castrol’s premium fully synthetic oil is uniquely engineered with fluid-titanium technology to provide unsurpassed protection for critical engine parts and ensure optimum performance – with strength to enable an extended drain interval of up to 20,000 miles. Extended service is not recommended for heavy service applications such as racing, frequent towing or towing, commercial use, extremely dirt/dusty conditions or excessive idling.

Engine oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean and cool engines. Engine oil types include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic) and recycled oils. Engine oil varies in weight and viscosity as well as in additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) sorts engine oils by viscosity – the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer engine oils are rated with two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather performance (winter or “W”).

SAE 0W-20

This oil has a weight of SAE 0W-20, i.e. it has a SAE viscosity of 0 at cold temperatures and a viscosity of 20 at normal operating temperature. Always read your vehicle’s owner’s manual to make sure it is the correct weight of engine oil for your vehicle.

This oil is a fully synthetic oil, i.e. crude oil is not used in its production. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of engine oils refined from crude oil and often offers better mechanical performance than conventional engine oil, including higher gas mileage and less engine wear at extreme temperatures. Due to its complex production process, it can often cost more than conventional engine oil.

Pros:

  • 20,000 miles between dewatering intervals guaranteed.
  • Recommended for heavy-duty applications such as towing, high performance driving, frequent short trips or idling, dusty, humid or extreme temperature conditions.
  • Developed with fluid-titanium technology to provide maximum strength under pressure.
  • Reduces metal-to-metal contact across a range of travel speeds.

Right now, your Honda Pilot 2017 is powerful and fuel efficient, but its overall performance may decrease over time. Routine automotive services can help maintain performance so your vehicle can drive through Miami, Hialeah and Doral for years to come. That is why it is important to follow the maintenance schedule for the Honda Pilot 2017.

The Honda Pilot Maintenance Plan is your guide to all the services your vehicle needs and when it needs them. It will outline everything from when you need an oil change to when you need to change filters, fluids and parts under the hood.

Read on to learn more about the 2017 maintenance plan for the Honda Pilot. Read our new review about Best oil for Honda Fit!

Honda pilot oil change

Oil changes are the most common form of maintenance your Honda pilot will need. The recommended oil change interval for the Honda Pilot is every 7,500 miles or every year, whichever occurs first.

Whether you perform this basic service yourself or bring your 2017 pilot to a professional service center, it is always important to ensure that your car gets the right oil for optimal performance. According to the owner’s manual, the Honda Pilot 2017 requires a high-quality 0W-20 detergent oil with an API certification seal on the container. Genuine Honda engine oil works best, but you can also use another engine oil with the recommended viscosity.

The Honda Pilot, a medium-sized SUV, was introduced in 2003 and replaced the old Honda Pass. It has a 3.5-liter V6 engine and uses 5W20 engine oil. Performing your own oil changes in your Honda Pilot is a rewarding task for the motivated do-it-yourself person. Referring to the maintenance schedule for your Honda Pilot, you will be informed of mileage intervals and other simple repairs and inspections that should also be performed.

Preparation

Find a flat, even surface on which you can park your Pilot so that you can lift it safely. A secure driveway is strongly recommended if you lift the Pilot with a jack and then place it on jack stands. Car ramps are even better and relatively inexpensive for oil changes. Let the engine run for a few minutes to warm up the engine oil, lift it on the ramps or stands of the car and open the hood. Attach the oil filler cap to the valve cap and remove. It will have an orange “5W20” imprint. This will create an air cushion in which the oil can drain out of the pan more quickly.

Drain oil

Crawl under the Pilot. Under no circumstances should you do this unless it is secured by jack stands or preferably by ramps. Do not use jacks as supports. Put on protective goggles so that you do not get anything in your eyes. A pair of latex gloves is also practical. Grab a set of metric wrenches – usually a 14mm wrench, an oil collection container, an oil filter wrench, the new oil filter and a few workshop cloths will work. Locate the oil pan and remove the oil screw with the sump underneath. While the oil is draining, locate the oil filter. Once the oil has dripped to a slight drip, reinsert the oil pan screw and tighten. Remove the oil filter with the oil filter wrench and place the oil collector back under the filter. Make sure that the rubber seal is on the old filter; otherwise, it is still on the oil filter housing and must be removed. Rub a small amount of used oil onto the seal of the new filter and tighten the filter only by hand. Do not tighten it with the wrench. Wipe all areas where oil has dripped with the cloths of the drawer and crawl out again from below.

Refilling the oil

The use of a funnel in the oil filler neck helps to prevent spillage. Add 4 liters of 5W20 engine oil to the oil filler neck. Replace the oil filler cap and start the regulator for 10-15 seconds. The regulator guides the oil through the oil pump, but also fills the oil filter. Locate the orange dipstick near the oil filler cap. They will be about half a quarter deep, as the 3.5 liter engine needs four and a half liters. Add the 1/2 liter and check the dipstick again. Once the oil level is correct, remove all tools from the underside and inside the engine compartment and lower the Pilot.

Resetting the maintenance lighting

Insert the key into the ignition as soon as the pilot is safely back on the ground. Press and hold the odometer release button. Turn the key to the accessory position or the key position on the engine with two clicks. Press and hold the odometer release button until the Maintenance lamp flashes and then resets.

Honda Pilot Maintenance Minder

Your Honda pilot needs additional services when changing the oil. However, it can be difficult to keep track of these maintenance items and when they need to be performed. Fortunately, Pilot 2017 is equipped with maintenance Minder to facilitate compliance with your car’s recommended service schedule.

Maintenance Minder is an innovative feature that calculates when your vehicle should be serviced based on mileage. It also monitors the condition of the oil and informs you when you need an oil change. When your vehicle is due for routine maintenance, Maintenance Minder displays the following alerts on the Multi-Information Display.

Main code A: Plan an oil change.

Main code B: Check exhaust system, brakes, suspension components and levels/conditions; replace engine oil and filter.

  • Subcode 1: Check tire condition and inflation; change tires.
  • Subcode 2: Replace dust and pollen filter and air filter element; check drive belt.
  • Subcode 3: Replace the automatic transmission oil and transfer medium.
  • Subcode 4: Replace spark plugs, timing belt and water pump; check valve clearance.
  • Subcode 5: Replace engine coolant.
  • Subcode 6: Change the rear differential fluid.

With Maintenance Minder, you no longer have to remember a specific interval for every service your Pilot needs. The system can do it for you and let you know when it’s time to schedule your next service appointment.

Schedule a service appointment for your Honda Pilot.

In addition to adhering to a recommended maintenance schedule, taking your Honda pilot to a trusted service center will maintain its condition and performance. Which brand of engine oil is the best.

Best oil for Honda Pilot

To illustrate the scale of this change, you understand that if only a third of U.S. drivers reduced their gasoline consumption by 2%, we would save nearly a billion gallons of gasoline and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by eight million tons per year. This is equivalent to removing about 1.5 million cars from the road.

In fact, the quality of the oil modified in your vehicle can significantly affect the life of your engine. It can literally be the difference between your car making 250K miles and 500K miles. If you are not planning to sell your car tomorrow, consider these additional examples:

  • At sub-zero temperatures like 0F, the quality of the oil can be the difference between circling the engine in 10 seconds or 3 minutes. Most people are already on the highway 3 minutes after starting their car.
  • The worse the quality of the engine oil, the greater the tendency for it to thicken over time (e.g. picture pasta sauce, which thickens when warmed up several times)! Low-value 5w-20 oil could actually turn into 5w-40 when you change it.
  • Engine cleanliness is significantly influenced by the quality of the engine oil. The highest quality oils are so clean that their detergents can actually clean deposits that have been created by maintenance work in the past, such as the gnawing stain on your favorite shirt that you never thought you would remove!

Fully synthetic is always better and more efficient than the cheaper synthetic blend.

RECOMMENDED ENGINE OIL

Oil contributes significantly to the performance and longevity of your engine. Always use an oW-20 grade premium detergent oil with the API certification seal. This seal indicates that the oil is energy efficient and meets the latest requirements of the American Petroleum Institute. It is strongly recommended that you use Honda engine oil in your vehicle. Make sure the API certification seal reads “For Petrol Engines”.

Please note that nowhere it says «Required”, only “Recommended”.

“Synthetic Oil”

You can use a synthetic engine oil if it meets the same requirements as a conventional engine oil: it displays the API certification seal and is the right weight. The oil and filter change intervals shown on the odometer/trip meter display or on the “multifunction display” must be observed.

Apparently, this allows you to use a synthetic oil, but does not require it.

Honda Pilot motor oil recommendations
