How to Pick the Best Motor Oil for Toyota 4runner?
To choose the right oil for your vehicle, ask yourself the following questions:
Viscosity ratings:
Oil is identified by its viscosity, which determines its ability to flow. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the more easily it flows.
Viscosity Selection:
To find out which viscosity to choose for your vehicle (5w-30 or 0w-20), look in your ownerβs manual for an oil viscosity chart.
Oil classification codes:
Container label means that the oil meets the current engine protection standard ACEA, API or ILSAC.

There are some key components you will need to change the oil on your 5th Gen 4Runner. Here is a list of everything you need:
- 6.6 liters 0W-20 oil (I recommend Mobil 1)
- Factory oil filter or the TRD oil filter
- Funnel
- Gaskets for oil drain plugs
- Cloth for cleaning and wiping off oil
- 10, 12 and 14 mm sockets

HOW TO CHANGE THE OIL AND OIL FILTER ON THE 5TH GENERATION TOYOTA 4RUNNER.
The oil change is much more important than the type of oil. Get yourself an oil with seal conditioners like you found it, and you should be fine. Do you have AGM Battery? So you want to know how to test an AGM battery.
There are many different types of maintenance you can perform on a vehicle, but probably the most important is changing the oil in your vehicle. If you want a reliable and durable vehicle, I would suggest changing your oil every 5,000 miles. You may not have to change it so often with synthetic oil, but it is worth the money. You should really only use synthetic oil, like Mobil 1. Although a 4-runner is bulletproof, an oil change is necessary and only helps in a smoother, longer lasting vehicle. Which brand of synthetic oil is the best
HOW TO CHANGE YOUR OIL – STEP BY STEP
STEP 1 – GOOD LOCATION
The first step is to find a place where you can change the oil on your car. I can fit under my 4Runner without a ramp or lift, but if you need to and want to lift your car, do so accordingly.
STEP 2 – GRAB SOME LATEX GLOVES
Always wear protective gloves and glasses when working with engine oil. Be careful if your car has been driven recently as the engine, gearbox and exhaust can be very hot. Keep rags or towels nearby to wipe off spilled liquids.
Prepare to change the oil in your 4Runner by putting on some latex gloves. Although this is not necessary, I think it is best to keep your hands as clean as possible from oils and fats. The use of gloves also helps with quick cleaning, as grease can sometimes be very hard to get from the hands.
STEP 3 – REMOVE THE SLIDE PLATE COVER
If your 4Runner is equipped with a front skid plate, you must remove the small cover on the skid plate that gives you access to the oil drain plug.
You must remove this cover using a 12 mm socket wrench and ratchet. After removing the screws, put aside the small sliding plate that covers the oil drain plug. I suggest that you put the screws on this small slide plate so that you can easily find them when it is time to put the cover back on.
STEP 4 – REMOVE THE OIL DRAIN PLUG
Prepare to remove the oil drain plug and drain the oil from your 4Runner. To do this, you will need a container to collect the oil that is leaking from the bottom. Although some oil will be lost through vehicle operation, plan for at least 6.6 quarts to come out (as this is the amount you are using).
After placing a container under the drain plug to collect the oil, use a 14 mm bushing and ratchet to loosen the drain plug. After the drain plug has loosened sufficiently, unscrew it by hand.
Make sure that you hold the drain plug tight and try not to let it fall into the oil collector. After removing the drain plug, the oil will quickly leak, so be ready to put your hand out of the way and drain the oil into the container.
In the meantime, you can wipe off any impurities from the drain plug with a clean microfiber cloth. Then set the drain plug aside until later.
STEP 5 – REMOVING THE FRONT SLIDE PLATE AND COVER
As your oil drains, remove the front slide plate and slide plate cover. You might ask why you need to do this, and the simple reason is to change the oil filter. You will not have access to the oil filter unless you remove the front skid plate and the skid plate cover.
To remove the cover, you will need a 10 mm socket wrench and a ratchet to remove five (5) screws. There is also one (1) pressure bolt that you must remove. Once you have removed the cover, you have access to remove all four (4) screws holding the sliding plate.
To remove these screws, use a 12 mm socket and a ratchet. A very important piece of advice is to first remove the front screws on the sliding plate. Then you must hold up the sliding plate and remove the rear two. If you do not hold the sliding plate when removing the last screw, the sliding plate will fall down and hit you. Although it does not weigh too much, it probably will not feel good. The front of the skid plate is on a hinge that is unhooked.
Take your time and turn the back of the sliding plate towards the floor to remove the sliding plate from the hinge. After removing the skid plate, place it on or near the side with the screws.
STEP 6 – REMOVE THE OIL FILTER
At this stage you will want to remove the oil filter – which I think is the most complex part of the whole process, but still quite simple. Before removing the filter, reinsert your drain plug and the small sliding plate that covers the drain plug. Then move the container where you collect your oil so that it is under the oil filter.
Using a ratchet with a 3/8″ extension, remove the metal plugs from the oil filter. Some oil drips out, so make sure you have a container to catch it. Your new oil filter should be supplied with a plastic tool to drain some oil further. All you have to do is push it into the bottom of the filter. The oil should then leak. Wait until the oil has leaked and then remove the plastic blow tool. In addition to removing the plastic drain tool, a small O-ring should also come out. This is garbage, so throw away the drain tool and the small O-ring.
Now you can remove the current filter. Use your 64 mm filter key and remove the filter housing. Make sure that you observe a small metal clip on the side of the housing. This tab should be aligned at the same point when the filter is reinstalled. After completely unscrewing the filter, remove the old filter from the housing and throw it away.
There is also an O-ring on the housing, which must be removed. You do not need any screwing tools and should be able to remove this O-ring easily by hand. I would recommend doing this by hand, as you do not want to damage the plastic threads.
STEP 7 – NEW O-RING FROM THE FILTER BOX
Remove your new O-ring from the filter box and coat it with some oil. Then place it on the filter housing. Make sure it sits all around. Then place your new filter in the housing. You do not have to worry about orientation as there is no right way up.
STEP 8 – SCREW THE FILTER ASSEMBLY BACK IN
Be sure to tighten until the metal indicator tab returns to its original position before removing the filter housing. Now install the small O-ring into the filter housing by first coating it with a small amount of oil and then placing the O-ring on the drain area of the filter housing. You can then reinsert the metal drain plug into the filter housing. You do not have to overtighten it, so just make sure it is tight.
STEP 9 – OIL CHANGE
After checking that your drain plug and oil filter are back in place, install 6.6 liters of 0W-20 oil into your 4Runner. Use a funnel as you do not want to splash oil on your engine.
STEP 10 – CHECK FOR LEAKS
When you have installed all 6.6 liters of oil, check the drain plug and filter housing and make sure there are no leaks. If you do not find any, you can install the slide plate and slide plate cover.
STEP 11 – RESET THE MAINTENANCE LIGHT
Now that you have completed the actual oil change procedure, you must reset your service light so that you know when to change it again. To do this, you need the key to your vehicle.
Turn your key into accessory mode (to the stop without actually starting the car).
Make sure that your odometer reads Trip A. If this is not the case, press the button to the right of the speedometer to access Trip A.
After checking that Trip A has been activated, turn the key to the Off position. Press and hold the odometer button, then turn the button back to the accessory mode. The screen should display the maintenance reset message.
Press and hold the odometer button until the service light is reset. After you have done this, you are good to go for another 5,000 miles.
- Start the truck and check for leaks underneath. If there are leaks, switch off the truck and check whether the drain plug or the filter must be tightened.
- After running the engine for a few minutes, allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes to check the oil level again. If the oil level is more than 1/2″ above the upper hole of the dipstick, drain the oil. If the oil level is below the lower hole of the dipstick, you will need to top up oil.
- Drain all oil from your old oil filter for 12-24 hours.
- Take your old oil and filter to a recycling facility. Most automotive parts dealers and garages accept this free of charge. Some cities and/or counties have a service where they collect used oil and filters from home. For more information, visit the American Petroleum Institute’s website on the collection and recycling of used engine oil.
Toyota 4runner motor oil recommendations
If your Toyota vehicle uses 0w-20 synthetic oil, the manufacturer has approved an oil change interval of 10,000 miles or 12 months. Vehicle owners using this type of oil should check the engine oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This allows the synthetic oil to be most effective. It is important to note that if you are driving a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia equipped with a Flex fuel compatible engine, the 10,000-mile oil change interval has NOT been approved by Toyota.
Some engines will be tuned for operation with 5w-20 mineral oil, but can safely use 0w-20 synthetic oil. These engines will continue to require the oil change interval of 5,000 miles/six months even if the synthetic oil is used.
Toyota 4runner engine oil type
I always run synthetic oil in all my cars and Mobil 1 is the most common synthetic oil in most shops. For my Toyota 4Runner oil change 2001, the manual requires 6 liters of 5W-30 engine oil. For my 4Runner, I switched to the extended power of Mobil 1 5w-20 to see if I could get better fuel economy with a slightly thinner oil. This is the oil weight Toyota prescribes for the newer 4Runners. It says it is designed for up to 15,000 miles, but I will turn it off at 5,000 as usual.

Engine oil grades for Toyota 4runner
SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and a good start in cold weather. If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 can be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change.
Toyota 4runner engine oil price
The average cost of a Toyota 4Runner oil change is between $112 and $142. The labor costs are estimated between 37 and 48 US dollars, while the parts are between 75 and 94 US dollars. The quote does not include taxes and fees.
CONCLUSION
Although there are some cars that make it a little easier to change the oil, the oil in the 4Runner can be changed relatively easily and in a short time.
Since the 4Runner is able to drive in some pretty rough areas, you need to take the time to maintain your vehicle as well as possible and avoid possible damage.
If you take the time to change your oil every 5,000 miles with a high quality plastic like Mobil 1, you will only benefit from the performance, durability and reliability of your vehicles on the trail and on the open road.
