How to Pick the Best Motor Oil for Toyota Camry?

To choose the right oil for your vehicle, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How old is your vehicle?
  • What kind of oil have you been using?
  • What kind of oil does your owner’s manual recommend?
  • Viscosity ratings:

Oil is identified by its viscosity, which determines its ability to flow. The lower the number, the thinner the oil and the more easily it flows.

    Viscosity Selection:

To find out which viscosity to choose for your vehicle (5w-30 or 0w-20), look in your owner’s manual for an oil viscosity chart.

    Oil classification codes:

Container label means that the oil meets the current engine protection standard ACEA, API or ILSAC.

    Toyota Camry Recommended Oil

We recommend the use of engine oil SAE 5w-30, 5w-20, 0w-20 for your Toyota Camry, which have the specification GF-5. ILSAC GF-5 oils are formulated to improve fuel efficiency and provide improved performance in a variety of areas including protection of pistons from deposits at high temperatures and improved protection against the formation of engine sludge on Toyota Camry. The best engine oils meet the most advanced GF-5 standard established by the International Lubricants Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC), enabling them to exceed the requirements of automakers like Toyota.

    Toyota Camry oil

The Toyota Camry family was a pioneer in just about every area from technical interior design to performance and productivity under the hood. All the goals you have for daily driving will surely be achieved with this sedan legend, but it can only run at its best if you have the right oil inside.

It can be hard to know which type is right for your engine because every engine is different. However, we have your answer right here if you want to change your oil yourself. Read our new review about Best oil for Toyota Highlander. It’s very interesting!

Toyota Camry 2.5-liter inline 4 oil type

According to the official Toyota Camry Owner’s Manual 2018, you should aim to add SAE 0W-16 viscosity oil to your engine. This is due to the way this oil is produced, which helps you achieve optimum performance when starting your engine at cold temperatures, working at high speeds, and everything else. However, if SAE 0W-16 is not available, you are sure to use higher quality fluids such as SAE 0W-20 oil inside.

Toyota Camry 3.5-liter V6 oil grade

The Camry 2018 also comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with higher speeds, and because of its unique configuration and higher power output, you need a stronger type of oil to keep it moving. SAE 0W-20 is recommended in the instruction manuals, but you can also use SAE 5W-20 in the pinch if necessary.

Synthetic Oil Good or Bad for Toyota Vehicle

First, a little bit about synthetic oil. Unlike regular motor oil, synthetic has fewer impurities. Also, synthetic motor oil is more temperature resistant, has a better viscosity index, and is more brittle than other motor oils. It seems that synthetic oil is the best choice for your engine. But don’t jump to any quick conclusions. Whether you choose a conventional synthetic oil depends on many factors.

The best oil for Toyota Camry

    Synthetic is there for you

    1. Timing of engine oil changes. Since synthetic oil is more resistant to adverse environmental conditions, it doesn’t make sense to use synthetic oil for quiet driving. If you skip oil changes and thereby extend your oil change range, you will add stress to the working mechanisms of your car. So synthetic oil provides some insurance against engine damage, even if you forget to change the oil.

    2. A car with low mileage. If you don’t drive more than 5,000 miles in 1 year, then synthetic oil is the best choice for you. Unlike conventional motor oil, synthetic oil can be used longer than 6 months and will not lose performance.

    3. Rough driving situations. As already mentioned synthetic oil is more resistant to adverse conditions and holds better than normal engine oil. This is especially the case when the engine temperature is always high or cold. Here are some examples of people who use synthetic oil.

Idlers. If your job requires that you leave your engine turned on and work at idle without airflow to cool the engine, it makes synthetic sense. This can be a situation like on a construction site, a delivery service, or a taxi driver.

Mainly desert or high altitude driving. If you live in a desert or at high altitudes (10k feet), your engine will run hotter and hotter. For these drivers, plastic is better because it can withstand these unique environments better than normal engine oil.

Cold climate. If you live in an area where the low temperature can reach -10F or lower, synthetic is the way to go. These cold temperatures can cause normal oil to decompose faster than synthetic oil.

Not normal driving: Racing, towing, towing, hauling, or off-roading. Quite accurately, every time your vehicle is used in a situation other than normal driving (stop and go, highway), you should consider synthetic driving. These other driving situations can place a heavy load on the engine. Well, it is not true that if you occasionally tow the boat, you need synthetic materials. However, if you regularly tow a Bobcat to the construction site, this is true for you.

    4. Personal choice. There are many theories about when to use synthetic oil. Some experts recommend it for all stop-and-go rides, but that is not exactly accurate. If you live in a traffic light city, the stop-and-go you do is not qualified. If you are stuck in a traffic jam several times a day, that is true.

There is also a theory that short trips with synthetics are better. This is controversial as the engine is never able to completely lubricate and recycle the oil. Both oils would then no longer be of much use. The best thing you can do in this case actually drives a little longer.

    Synthetic blends, buyers caution

There are several types of synthetic oil – one of them is a synthetic blend. The problem with this term is its inability to be regulated. This means that this blend for a car can have different values in different shops and from different manufacturers. Study the label carefully. Some places call it a 1% synthetic blend and a 99% regular blend (not very synthetic).

How does synthetic oil help protect the engine of my Toyota?

Tests have shown that Mobil 1 can reach all moving parts of the engine faster than some conventional oils. Until your oil circulates completely, friction between dry parts of the engine slowly reduces the life of the engine. Synthetic engine oils such as Mobil 1 begin to circulate immediately and protect every moving part in the engine, which over time can lead to savings in maintenance costs.

What oil should I buy for my Toyota?

It is important to use the right oil in your car to meet the specifications of the Toyota manufacturer. Using the correct Mobil 1 product during routine maintenance and in accordance with your vehicle’s manual will not affect the Toyota manufacturer’s warranty.

    Toyota Camry motor oil recommendations

Toyota has these recommendations for synthetic oil:
Only Toyota vehicles that require 0w-20 synthetic oil (except the 2TR-FE & 3UR-FBE engines*) have been approved for extended oil change intervals of 10,000 miles/12 months. (However, you should continue to check the oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This will help your engine take full advantage of the synthetic oil.)

Vehicles, where 0w-20 is an option on 5w-20 mineral oil (or 5w-30), will still require 5,000 miles/6 months oil change intervals even if 0w-20 oil is used.

For vehicles with 10,000-mile oil change intervals, the 5,000-mile maintenance interval has not been eliminated. Traditional 5,000-mile maintenance procedures (e.g. tire rotation) will continue to be required and fluid levels (e.g. brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.

Does the vehicle operation meet the standard criteria for “Special Operating Conditions” such as: When driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, repeated short trips at 32Ëš F or extended idling, the engine oil must be changed at intervals of 5,000 miles, regardless of the type of oil used.

*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines are not currently approved for the 10,000-mile interval. An oil change interval of 5,000 miles/6 months is still required for these vehicles. The Flex Fuel 3UR-FBE also requires an interval of 2,500 miles when operated with E85. Best engine oil for auto

How to Change Oil in a Toyota Camry

There are two ways to change the oil in your Camry: you can take it to the Riverside Toyota service department or you can do it yourself at home in Cartersville. If you choose the DIY route, you should take these steps.

    Parts:

    • Funnel
    • rag
    • oil filters
    • oil drip pan
    • Oil (See instruction manual for how many quarts)

    Directions:

    • Place the oil pan under the Camry, remove the plugs and drain the oil.
    • Remove the old oil filter and replace it with a new one.
    • Replace the oil drain plug.
    • Unscrew the engine oil reservoir.
    • Use the funnel to add the oil quantity (in quartz) recommended in the operating instructions.
    • When adding the oil, make sure that nothing escapes from the bottom of your Camry.
    • Check the dipstick and add more oil if necessary.
    • Reset the service light when it is lit.

I own 2 camrys. One is a 2014 with the 2AR-FE engine. The other is a 2016 with the same 2.5L 4 cyl engine. Am having trouble deciding what oil
to use. Toyota recommends OW-20. If the oil is unavailable they say I can use 5W-20 til the next oil change. They also said that if I do severe
driving (high speeds or towing) i can use OW-30 but they wont put it in writing. All the oil change shops want to put the OW-20 in. I guess
they are afraid of a lawsuit. My wife and I drive very little the 2014 has under 50,000 mi and her 2016 has 25000 mi. We life in Las Vegas,
Nevada and it is hot and dry most the year. 4 four months it is always over 100 degrees F. IN my garage it is usually 80-90 degrees. What oil do you
recommend? I think Toyota still thinks the 5W-20 is mineral oil but when I tried it I used full synthetic. It performed the same as the OW-20.
Also I change the oil every 6 mos even if the mileage is very little. Please respond. I am very curious what you think

      • Hi, Barry!

Yes, indeed, TOYOTA recommends 0w-20 or 5ts-20, you can even 0w-30 and 5w-30. You live in a hot climate, so a liquid oil is better: 0w-20. 0w-20 oil will be more expensive. You can buy 0w-30 and change more often, but I would recommend using 0w-20. I like idemitsu zepro and amsoil. But you can also buy cheaper oil.
