The viscosity is better, but it is also more brittle than other motor oils. Synthetic oil may be the best choice for your car. But it’s not that simple. In fact, many factors influence the choice of synthetic or conventional motor oil.
Synthetic oil is for you if:
1. You forget about oil changes. Synthetic oil is more resistant to adverse conditions. And if you didn’t change your oil on time, it wouldn’t be a big problem if you were using conventional motor oil. Simply put, synthetic material gives you some insurance against engine damage by not having to change your oil.
2. Low mileage car. If it takes you a year to get 5,000 miles, synthetic oil is a great choice for you. Synthetic oil doesn’t lose its effectiveness after six months of use, unlike regular motor oil.
3. Severe driving situations. Synthetic oil is more resistant to harsh driving situations than conventional motor oil. This is a big plus when running the engine at maximum engine temperatures (both heat and cold). Here are some examples of people running on synthetic oil.

- Vehicles where 0w-20 is an option on 5w-20 mineral oil (or 5w-30) will still require 5,000 miles/6 months oil change intervals even if 0w-20 oil is used.
- For vehicles with 10,000-mile oil change intervals, the 5,000-mile maintenance interval has not been eliminated. Traditional 5,000-mile maintenance procedures (e.g. tire rotation) will continue to be required and fluid levels (e.g. brake fluid) will need to be checked and adjusted at this time.
- Does the vehicle operation meet the standard criteria for “Special Operating Conditions” such as: When driving off-road, on dirt roads, towing a trailer, repeated short trips at 32ห F or extended idling, the engine oil must be changed at intervals of 5,000 miles, regardless of the type of oil used.
*The 2TR-FE (4Runner / Tacoma) and the 3UR-FBE (Flex Fuel Tundra / Sequoia) are the exceptions to this new change interval program; these engines are not currently approved for the 10,000-mile interval. Maintenance intervals for synthetic oil
If your Toyota vehicle uses 0w-20 synthetic oil, the manufacturer has approved an oil change interval of 10,000 miles or 12 months. Vehicle owners using this type of oil should check the engine oil level regularly and top it up if necessary. This allows the synthetic oil to be most effective. It is important to note that if you are driving a Toyota Tundra or Toyota Sequoia equipped with a Flex fuel compatible engine, the 10,000-mile oil change interval has NOT been approved by Toyota.
Some engines will be tuned for operation with 5w-20 mineral oil, but can safely use 0w-20 synthetic oil. These engines will continue to require the oil change interval of 5,000 miles/six months even if the synthetic oil is used.
Other maintenance measures
Just because a vehicle has a longer oil change interval does not mean that owners can ignore the other maintenance requirements of their vehicle. Even if the oil only needs to be changed once a year or after 10,000 miles, services are required at 5,000 mile intervals. These include things like tire changes and brake inspections.
Owners who use their vehicles in adverse environments such as driving on dirt roads, off-roading, heavy towing and repeated short trips at temperatures below 32 degrees still require Toyota to maintain the 5,000 mile/six month interval. This also applies when an owner uses synthetic oil.
