Engine oil for Lexus

Engine oil: We rarely think about it until we need it. Then most of us simply pay for someone else to take care of it. But choosing the right oil for your car is more complex than the technology at your local quick lubrication service, which punches your make and model into the shop’s computer. There are many factors to consider: Viscosity, synthetic or conventional, high mileage or standard.

Fortunately, you have a few things you know how to do in this minefield. Your greatest ally is the manual in your glove compartment. In it, you should find the recommended tire PSI and traction, as well as the manufacturer’s recommended engine oil, usually up to a recommended brand. In addition, strict industry regulations mean that about 95% of engine oils are equivalent. As long as you see the American Petroleum Institute certification and classification on your oil carton (they are usually prominently displayed), not much can go wrong.

For a particular vehicle it is recommended to use only the type of lubricant that corresponds to the classification and tolerances of the manufacturer for the particular vehicle version. This is due to the fact that certain types of factory lubricants may not meet certain performance characteristics of Lexus engines.

We all know that the ability of an engine oil to prevent wear on your engine is one of the most important factors you need to consider. From the moment you start your engine, there are more than a dozen moving parts that create friction between them. You need a good engine oil to prevent wear on these components as much as possible, and AMSOIL has the answer.

The anti-wear additives provide a reported 75% higher engine protection than other leading brands out there. This equates to excellent fuel economy, longer oil change intervals, and stable viscosity at extreme temperatures. Amazingly, you can achieve a range of 15,000 to 25,000 miles per application – a figure that puts many other synthetic oil brands in the shade.

In terms of compatibility, you can use the AMSOIL signature series with other synthetic or conventional oils, but for the best results, it is better to drain it first.

AMSOIL became famous in 1972 with the introduction of the first synthetic engine oil that met the strict requirements of the American Petroleum Institute. Since then they have been a leader in this field and have consistently outperformed their competitors. The bottom line is that you need to try this oil, if not for yourself, then for your vehicle.

So here is what you need to know: the difference between synthetic and conventional oils and how to read the viscosity. Synthetic oils are formulated from petrochemicals to be more adaptable than conventional oils. Although both contain additives and detergents, synthetic oils generally last longer and maintain their viscosity even at extreme temperatures.

There are two major factors with synthetics: the price (some can cost up to twice as much as conventional oil) and the condition of your engine. Most newer performance and luxury cars recommend synthetic oils. But if you have an older, very quiet car, some drivers have complained about leaks once they made the switch to synthetic oils. If your car is newer, we cannot recommend synthetic oils enough. If you are not sure if it is suitable for your car, ask your mechanic.

As far as viscosity is concerned, the bottle shows a grade, e.g. 5W30. This first number is the temperature compared to zero degrees Fahrenheit, the W stands for winter, and the second number is the viscosity index, or how thick and fluid the oil is. So 5W30 means that the oil keeps at temperatures as low as 5 degrees Celsius and is less viscous than something that is 10W40, for example. Check your user manual first, but some people use different viscosities depending on the season or mileage. If in doubt, you should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

By models

Oil for Lexus RX 300

What kind of synthetic oil do I need?

There are two basic types of synthetic oils currently available on the market. Choosing which of these two types of oil is right for your vehicle depends on a variety of factors, which we will examine in more detail in the next section. Suffice it to say that it is best to first understand the 2 types of synthetic oils.

  • Synthetic blend

This type of synthetic oil is actually a combination of conventional engine oil and the synthetic base oil of a company. It can be seen more as a souped-up version of your conventional engine oil. It also offers you performance enhancements and improved protection for your engine, except that they still pale in comparison to fully synthetic. The good thing about synthetic blends is that you get some of the benefits of fully synthetic, but pay only slightly more than for conventional oil.

  • Full synthetic

As we have discussed, solid plastics are those made in the laboratory, complete with a very unique molecular structure and embedded with advanced additives to give you the best protection and performance for your engine.

This is where things can get complicated. Since the development of full synthetic engine oils takes place in the laboratory, the inherent protective and performance properties vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Therefore, you may have several synthetic oils, all of which are classified as SAE 5W-20, but the experience of motorists varies greatly. The answer lies in the formulation of the product. Because it is technically a blend of proprietary synthetic base oil and advanced additives, each company can have its own patented technology for each component of the blend.

Apart from this, you may end up with full synthetics that clean your engines much better, while others may be able to provide you with better engine protection. Some offer exceptional thermal protection but are lousy at cold starts. It is therefore important to choose a fully synthetic that will give you the desired result for your car.

Factors to be considered

We said that the choice of synthetic oil you want to use for your car depends on a variety of factors. So we are here to examine some of these factors that you should consider when choosing the synthetic motor oil for your car.

  • Compatibility with existing oil

While it is perfectly okay to cover your conventional oil with full synthetic oil, this is generally not recommended as you will simply dilute the unique chemical properties of synthetic oil. In simple terms, you may not be able to achieve the best performance and protection for your car. Instead, it is best to drain your engine oil, flush it with a suitable solution and then replace it with a synthetic oil.

  • Viscosity class

We have talked about this unique property of oil – viscosity – or thickness. What you would want is the right viscosity gradation in your engine oil depending on the prevailing environmental conditions in your region.

If you’re the type of driver who’s usually a devil behind the wheel, or if you like to haul bulky and heavy things, or just ride along on a really hot and humid day, you’ll find that the best viscosity grade is one with a “thicker” consistency. This means that you will need to choose about 10W-40 or even 15W-50. This is especially true for engines that are exposed to high temperatures or loads.

On the other hand, if you live in an area where it snows 364 days a year and the only day left is in the mild ‘60s, then you’d better choose a synthetic oil with an exceptionally low viscosity grade for low temperatures. You can choose a 5W-20 or even 0W-20.

  • Additives

One of the main distinguishing features of full synthetics compared to synthetic blends and conventional engine oils is the presence of additives. Unfortunately, it is also what distinguishes one brand of synthetic oils from the next, because, as we have already mentioned, different companies will have different views on what they believe to be the best performing engine oil. Nevertheless, it would be wise to look at the most common additives used in modern synthetic oils.

Anti-foaming agent – As the name suggests, this additive prevents the formation of bubbles or foam that can cause cavitation in the oil. These cavitations are air inclusions that can affect the important properties of synthetic oil, especially lubrication.

Antioxidants – Just as antioxidants negate the effects of free radicals in the body, antioxidant additives in engine oils can have almost the same effect. This helps to protect the oil from premature degradation, further increasing the life and overall performance of the oil.

Anti-wear agents – One of the most commonly used anti-wear agents in today’s plastics is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or ZDDP. While little is known about how this substance can reduce the rate of degradation of metal elements in the engine, the general observation is that it can significantly extend the overall life of your car’s engine.

Conditioners – These additives, also known as plasticizers, are usually found in formulations suitable for older engines or engines with high mileage. They try to soften the seals so that they can expand more easily and form a tight fit in the respective fittings. They are perfect for preventing leakage.
