Numerous cars are on the road today without an intact spare or emergency wheel. The reason is often that the standard equipment of many vehicles no longer includes a classic spare wheel or that the original spare wheel is defective. Some drivers also shy away from the effort involved in changing a tire.
The components of a complete tire repair kit
A complete tire repair kit consists of a compressor, which can be operated from the vehicle’s electrical system via a cigarette lighter, and a tire sealant, which is often filled into the tire’s interior via the tire valve using a nozzle. Different filling techniques are used. In some puncture kits, the sealant is pressed into the tire from a squeeze bottle. In other variants, a compressor is used to fill the defective tire with the sealant. The compressor also ensures that the tire is inflated to the required pressure.
In addition to the tire sealant, the scope of delivery usually includes a metal valve cap – often with an integrated extractor – as well as a replacement valve insert and a filler hose. Also, often repair kit includes gloves and an instruction manual.
Advantages and disadvantages of tire repair kits
Repair kits can be used whenever a vehicle is not equipped with a (full-sized) spare wheel or the driver wants to save himself the hassle of changing a wheel, which is often associated with dirt.
For reasons of space or weight saving, many vehicles do not have a classic spare wheel or an emergency wheel that allows the vehicle to be driven on to the next workshop. in such cases, the breakdown kit is a suitable – sometimes indispensable – alternative. Tire repair kits have the advantage that they can be applied relatively quickly and cleanly and that, if necessary, the tiresome and time-consuming process of changing a wheel is eliminated. In addition, a repair kit is relatively inexpensive. Once you have the basic equipment with the compressor, you only need a refill of the tire sealant from time to time.
Tire repair kits have the disadvantage that they can only be used for small-scale damage to the tire tread. They are most suitable for the temporary removal of cuts up to five to seven millimeters in size, such as those typically caused by nails, screws, or broken glass. After successful use of the breakdown kit, the vehicle can be driven at reduced speed to the nearest workshop.
A maximum speed of 80 km/h and a driving distance of no more than 20 to 30 km is often recommended. The tires provisionally repaired with the repair kit are usually not suitable for retreading (even if professionally), so they cannot be reused. Therefore, a new tire must often be purchased, even though the tire could in principle be repaired. On cars with tire pressure monitoring systems, the tire pressure sensors are sometimes gummed up or otherwise rendered useless by the sealant.

How to repair the tire
If the situation allows, the wheel should first be removed using a jack and appropriate tools so that the tire can be pulled off and the patch can later be treated from the inside with a liquid tire patch.
- First look for the damage and remove any objects still stuck in the tire, preferably with pliers. Then clean the hole with the piercer included in the set.
- Then remove a repaired stick from the packaging and thread it into the retractor tool (piercing awl) so that the stick is centered in the tool opening.
- Now apply the vulcanizing paste both to the hole in the tire and to the repair stick.
- Then press the reamer into the hole in the tire with full force. Once the repair stick is deep enough in the tire, rotate the pricker 180° (360° is better) and pull the tool back out of the tire.
- Finally, cut off the protruding material of the stick so that it is flat with the tire. Now the tire can be inflated again and the ride can be continued.
If you have some manual skills and are confident in the repair process, a tire repair kit is ideal equipment for every car, motor home, and garage. Ideally, you try in advance the patching of a tire on an old worn model, which should anyway go to recycling.
